I searched and didn't see a thread in the last 30 so sorry if this is a dupe.

LGS has a significant amount of 4166 and sense in real life I live in Alaska and travel back often for hunting etc the temp insensitivity has me intrigued.

Right now I'm loading 4064 and just picked up varget to play with, both for AR platforms with 77gn and 175gn SMKs/Nosler competitions so looking at how I could expect 4166 to compare.

Thanks.

From everything I have heard and read, the IMR-4166 is the new generation replacement for IMR-4064

By new generation, I mean an Enduron Technology series propellant that offers a copper fouling eliminator, insensitivity to temperature changes, ideal loading density and being more environmentally friendly.

The Hodgdon 2014/15 Burn Rate chart has IMR-4166 positioned at # 94, while IMR-4064 is positioned at # 95. So, It appears that the burn rate is extremely close or possibly even as close as it can be manufactured to IMR-4064.

The kernel size is also smaller. It doesn't quite qualify as a SSC powder, but it is somewhat shorter than 4064. IMR-4064 has always been a powder that varied quite a bit in kernel length. In the same can, you would see a range of .060 ~ .120. With 4166, kernel length is more uniform at around .060 ~ .075. and kernel diameter is pegged at about .040, which is similar to the old 4064.

As far as how you would shoot with 4166, well, only your individual rifle and load work-up can tell you that. I have both here for my Spring/Summer testing, but I haven't actually burned any of it yet.

HTH!

I picked some up the other day and I just looked at it, I'm not sure how it will meter. It's kind of in between it seems. I need to try it out when my new PM gets here. It's not going to be Varget bad though.

I have no experience with 4166, but...  I have found the inexpensive Lee Precision 90058 Perfect Powder Measure does a darn good job with stick type powders.  Much better results than my RCBS Uniflow does with stick type powders.  The Lee does tend to leak with flake and ball powders, but that's what keeps my RCBS from the EE.

Well, ok. Wait while I try metering it in my uniflo. Back in a few minutes.

Ok, I just did about 100 drops. It caught the handle about half the time. But, it was easy to push through. I didn't have to put my thumb under the handle like I have to do with 4895 or similar
