Which of these powders do you guys prefer? Specifically for 55gn Fmj in 223.

I haven't been able to find any TAC but I have plenty of the AR Comp and like it. It's a pretty good powder for general target and plinking loads.

I haven't loaded up anything heavier than a 55gr bullet so I can't speak to that either.

The other powders I load with are CFE223, H335, XBR 8208. Right now I am primarily burning through the AR Comp.

I like Tac. I can load 26.5 for two different rifles with hornady 55gr. I won't win any matches with that load but its definitely accurate enough for plinking and training.

Please note CKyleC's post did not indicate his load is in the 5.56 Nato listing in Western Powders data.  If brass life and accuracy is your goal, I find 25.5 to be both.  Also, if you haven't yet, you can study Tac load data at  www.westernpowders.com.

Several bullets in the 55 grain listings use max charges less than 25.5, several at or near this charge.  I have used a metric ton of Tac, 5.56 data is only for those who want to duplicate Nato loads.  For general shooting, I really feel the standard .223 loads will give you more enjoyment and less stress on equipment.

It all depends on which powder your rifle prefers.

Tac is a ball powder, AR Comp is a short cut extruded.

So Tac will measure slightly better than AR Comp.

My AR prefers Tac.

What's cheaper? I shoot Tac for a couple things, but it's kinda spendy.

I would try to find pull down powder for 55gr blasting ammo.

I like TAC especially how well it meters.

I reload all of my plinking 55 gr loads with 24 gr of TAC. Very soft shooting, easy on the brass and doesn't use as much powder... About the same velocity as PMC Bronze, a very mild load.

Hard to go wrong with TAC.

Meters exceptionally well, Works with a wide range of bullets and is very temperature insensitive.

I've been loading AA2230 for plinking loads but I just received 6 pounds of Tac. Looking forward to try it out since I've had great results with other Ramshot powders.

Comp metered like crap for me, groups were ehhh.

Tac metered great, groups again were less then stellar.

You didn't ask but XBR out shoots all loads I've developed.

TAC is cheap, but I have never gotten good results with it.  YMMV

Have no experience with the AR Comp, but I love Tac

It's very versatile. I have a very accurate Hrn 55 fmj plinking load, and a sub 1 inch match load using Hrn75 grn Match

Can't go wrong with TAC.

Thanks for the input guys! I ended up with a couple pounds of TAC and five pounds of AR Comp. So I guess I'll just have to try a few loads out and see what I like best. I've never seen either of these two powders locally so I ordered it online. I try to order enough to help with the hazmat fee. And most of the powder locally is atleast ten dollars more a pound then online.

Cool, let us know what you think of them after you've worked up some loads.

I would like to try some TAC if I could find it locally or online. In the meantime I've been pleased with the AR Comp results.

I have a pound of TAC and a pound of AR Comp, been meaning to try it out. But I scored 4 8 lb's of H 335, have been so happy with it for my 55 gr blasting load, haven't got to trying it yet.

Would AR Comp or TAC be better for the 1000 SS 109 pills I got laying around?

I use my TAC exclusively for 68grn long range ammo in my AR.  It works very well at up to 500yd apple shooting.

If your happy with H-335, stay with it.

I got slightly better results over H-335 with Tac, but that's my AR not yours.

Never tried AR Comp with SS-109's. I stay with Tac on these.

I researched several powders to reload 223 with- TAC, AR Comp, H335, IMR 3031, Varget, and IMR 8208 XBR.

I could find TAC and AR Comp online and locally. I couldn't find H335, IMR 3031, or Varget anywhere, so I eliminated those as potential choices. After doing quite a bit of reading, I decided on IMR  8208 XBR. It seems to be unaffected by temperature, so your shots will be consistent whether shooting in 20* or 100* weather. It is also a super short grained extruded powder, and meters extremely well. Every review that I read said it shot very cleanly, and regardless of where people were at grain wise working up their loads, they were shooting very good groupings.

I found some online and was able to get 8lbs. I haven't loaded any 223 yet with the 8208, but I will be using CCI 400/LC brass/55gr fmj for plinking ammo, and GM205M/LC brass/Nosler 55gr BT for target and varmint rounds. If it's as good as all the reviews make it out to be, it should shoot really well. I may load some 308 with it as well.

My cost was $23/lb for the 8208, and even when I found TAC online at $149 for 8lbs, with shipping and Haz fee, it would have ended up being ~$200. I paid $220 shipped for the 8028, so it's pretty comparable in price.

I figured that I would mention it. All I heard about from friends that reload, and other people locally was TAC is the best powder for 223. I had not heard much about 8208 XBR until I started researching different powders to reload 223. I'm not saying TAC is bad by any means, but after reading all that I did on the 8208 XBR, it sounds like exactly what I'm looking for.

So if you haven't heard about 8208 XBR, and you're considering TAC or AR Comp, check it out. If you're just loading strictly plinking rounds, then as others suggested, pick up whatever is cheapest that you can find.
