Ok, I received 2 very well used square deal B's from my father a sa gift some time ago and have started trying to load with them.  One of the SDB's was broken and being sent back. There was only enough parts to get one working either way so im trying to put the best ones in the working press. I am also trying to order the missing parts to get machine #2 working as well.  I have a couple questions im hoping someone could answer.

- I managed to lose one of the locator buttons, but im having trouble figuring out how these work with the stations and caliber changes.  He had .38spl crimper in one machine, and im trying to figure out which locator buttons to use being that im reloading 9mm.  I read the manual, it it seems to tell me that the only caliber specific button is station 4?  Am I correct in assuming the number on the buttons corresponds to the station on the machine?  If so, how do you tell what size you are using?  I would like to order a complete set for 9mmand am a bit lost here.

- One of the primer feed assemblies doesn't seem to be functioning correctly. The primer catches the shellplate as it comes up and makes an audible "click", resulting in about 40% of my primers being inserted wrong.  Is there an adjustment or part I can replace to fix this?

- one of the primer assemblies has a plastic spacer on the bottom that the two allen screws goes through first before going into the machine. The second assembly does not have it.  I can't even find that part on the Dillon website, is it something that is not necessary?

Thanks in advance for any help!

The manuals are really good.  Download here:  SBD manual

The numbers are the locator buttons are based on the case size (not location on the press).  There are 4 sizes.  If you look on page 14 of the manual, it will tell you what size is required for the caliber you're loading.  The 9mm needs the #3 locators.

You don't have to use locator buttons, but you risk having centrifugal force sliding the case out from the shell plate.  You'll crush a case when you try to cycle the press.

On the shell plate catching the primer, it sounds like the shell plate isn't indexing properly.  There are a whole bunch of things at can cause that - most being related to the press needing a good cleaning.

Can't help you with the last one.

Dillon also has some forums that have been helpful.

Thanks, that makes sense.  So I need number 3 locators in all three positions? Right now I have 2,3,and 4 in those respective positions....

Im assuming they came from the spares kit like that.  My dads in Iraq right now so asking him whats going on with these presses is pretty hard.

Yes number 3 in all.  Order a couple of extras,  they get lost often.

I tend to leave the button out of the bullet seating station.  I usually pull about every 20th case out to check the powder charge.  Plus it's pretty easy to make sure the case is fully in the shell plate while setting the bullet in place.

Yeah, probably.  Dillon has been a lot of help in the past when I called looking for help.  My SBD is one of the very first.  And it's showing it's age.  I'm also thinking about sending mine back for some factory love.  The very best part - I bought it used and only paid $65 for it.

If you've got the time, I'd tear the entire thing down and clean everything.  It's amazing where little pieces of tumbling media, powder and brass can get.

Another good resource for relatively drama-free Dillon advice is on Facebook - The Dillon Reloaders Group

Cheers,

Both of my SDB's don't even have a hole for the locator at the sizing station.

If they are both high mileage machines, you will be well served to sent them back to Dillon for a refurb. They will come back like new with all missing parts replaced.

There shouldn't be one there.  You put the brass in there by hand, just make sure you push it all the way against the shell plate.

Ah, I was confused because the manual seems to list them in sets of four needed.

Im doing that tomorrow.  Had to send one in anyway, might as well send both and have the index issue fixed.

It's dirty, piece of spilled powder is jamming. Clean the assembly.
