We (B-I-L and I) learned a valuable lesson the other day, .45 Colt and .44 mag cases are not all that different in size. This could have been a big problem if they made it into my rifle.

If those are low powder cast loads it would most likely only split the cases or made them into 45 colts.

At least it was easy enough to spot.

You ought to see what happens when you mistake a Lee carbide size die for one of their FCDs with the crimp sleeve removed.
It wasn't me but I was there.

They are fairly light loads. 255 grain bullet over 18.5 grains of 2400.

Ya, that's bad.  44 mag cases are strong. They just might hold up to the pressure. Or they may hold on long enough to build enough pressure to fail spectacularly.

Glad you caught the mistake. Bet that was a funny WTF moment trying to figure out why those cases looked like they do

We couldn't figure out why they looked like that until we looked at the head stamp. I guess we didn't sort well after cleaning. We went through the rest of the .45 Colt brass and found a bunch more .44 mag.

I'crossed .45 Colt for 30+ yrs but picked up a  nice S&W mdl 29 this spring. Haven't started loading for it yet because.... But I'll ne using nickled cases for the .44 to help avoid this. Or that's the plan.

Glad you caught that before going to the range.

I used to tumble 45Acp, 45 Colt, and 44mag/spl brass together so I could fill the big Dillon tumbler.   Picking out the ACP and 44spl was easy, but separating the 44mag from the Colts was a pain.  Then when I loaded 45Colt I double checked the head stamps again.  I ended missing one once and fired it out of my full size Vaquero.   The 44 case held up but I never loaded that one again.  The loads were plinking loads, 255 grain cast  going about 750fps.

Needless to say I don't do that anymore.  Anytime I pickup 44mag cases and I'm shooting 45Colt, they go in a separate bag.

I always tumble similar brass together. I think I'll keep doing it that way, but I need to be more careful separating the brass.

I've seen 5 rounds of 44 mag go through a 45 Colt Ruger Vaquero. The cases were jacked up but the gun held them with no ill effects. The guy shooting said he felt they were a little hotter then normal.

Oops

I don't shoot much .45 Colt so I only use nickel plated cases and regular brass for my .44

I don't think I'll try them in my levergun. I think it would hold up just fine, but I don't want to take the chance. I marked the rounds and put them aside as a reminder to be careful. Also, just to show that I can do stupid things too.

I'm still trying to figure out how you could bell the mouth of the .44 case out to accept an.45 caliber bullet without knowing it!

I imagine it has a lot to do with the 44 mag brass having already been run through a 45 sizing die.

44 Mag brass would go through a 45 Colt die with zero effort because it's so much smaller than the inside of the die.

I didn't notice any extra effort operating the press.

This. It would be like when you run a .380 through a 9mm sizing die.  Feels like there is no resistance.
