This is a hornady .223 sizing die. The area at the bottom is rough and a couple thousandth of an inch deep. The die is almost new and I've run nothing through it but maybe 400 clean and lubed brass casings,  none of which required any undo force. I didn't notice it until the I was cleaning it today. I guess my issue is I think it must have been like this out of the box but I can't be sure. Has anyone seen anything like this

After down loading & editing your photo, i see what your talking about.  I dont think its an issue unless the die marks the brass. The sized brass in that area should  not be larger than whats shown in the 223 rem cartridge drawing  .3759" maximum,   here.   http://www.saami.org/specifications_and_information/index.cfm?page=CC Do get more opinions.

Hey thanks for taking the time to improve the photo. Very much appreciated

It actually is marking the brass. It's very slight but it is leaving kind of a multiple streak

Hornady in my experience has very good customer service. Call them. I'll bet they send you a new sizer without having to send the bad one back. My Hornady sizing die is smooth right up to the mouth.

x2.  Why mess with it?  Get it replaced and move on.

x3 One of the best things I have found out about reloading is that it seems that all of the companies have uber-good customer service...

Have you tried cleaning it with a bronze or brass brush?  It looks like a slightly rough spot that collected, dirtied, and hardened some lube.

The area in question is actually recessed, it doesn't protrude.
