I am running out of my Varget and don't know when I'll be able to get anywhere that carries it.  So, I have a new can of IMR 4064 (given to me by a friend).  The lightest Sierra bullet that the Hodgdon's website list for this powder is 53 grains, but an old Sierra manual I have has a load for their 50 grain Spitzer Varminter bullet which I like to use.  I was wondering what anyone thought of this powder for reloading 223's for use in an AR-15?

IMR 4064 will be a compressed load that can be a pain. Other wise it goes bang, but i could not make a super accurate loading using it. Good for plinking. Tried  with the 3 bullets on the right side in a Savage Axis bolt gun.   Your result may be different.

IMR 4064 is much better suited for .308 loads. You'll need something faster for .223.

Dig a few pages deeper. There's been a couple threads about this. 25gr under 52/53gr SMKs are superb for me.

Yes, please look back a couple pages. This subject seems to come up once a week.

edit,

Maybe it doesn't come up that often after all, only found 1 recent thread,

So carry on.

I'm guessing that it has something to do with it's availability.  I've seen it on the shelf more frequently than anything else in the last few months. It has become a "Better than nothing" powder.

I know I picked some up for myself because my keg of H4895 is getting empty,  and I'd rather have something to use if I can't find any more as a backup for .308 shooting.

*I'm not saying this is a great group by any means, you'll see what I did in the rest of the post.*

I just shot my second batch reloads ever, and they were loaded with 24.2 grains of IMR 4064 and Berry's 55 gr. FMJBT. I wasn't shooting for any kind of accuracy really, mainly just wanted to make sure they would function ok. This was shot at about 80 yards using a BCM 14.5" rifle with a 2 moa Aimpoint Micro T1. I laid prone and rested the magazine on the ground for a little extra support and fired as soon as I felt I was centered back on the target. (I couldn't see the "Q" at that distance.) This "group" was a little over 3" not counting the one at the top right, which I'm sure was my fault.

I feel like I could certainly tighten this group up considerably with one of my other AR's with some magnification, bipod, and squeeze bag. I might try that out this weekend. I was pretty impressed with what I was able to do with only the second batch of reloads I have ever loaded, without even really trying for any great accuracy. I'm pretty confident that IMR 4064 will at least make a great plinking load if nothing else. Looking forward to shooting the rest of these for a little better accuracy to see what they will really do, I have 30/50 left.

I have a ton of 4064, so I have started to experiment with it a little in .223.  I was trying to work up a load for my heavy barrel rifle and shot this group with 23.1 grains of 4064 behind a Sierra 69gr. Matchking FMJBT.
This is a 10 shot group, shot prone off a bipod with no rear bag, just using my off hand under the stock for support.  I know I pulled at least one of the shots outside the main group.
I only had the 10 with this powder charge at the time, but have since loaded up some more and when I get a chance I am going to try some more to make sure this wasn't just a fluke.  Hopefully, this load will be a winner in this rifle.

This info is really encouraging.  I will work up some loads today with this IMR 4064.  My FFL dealer called and the gun is on the UPS truck!  He will get today and I will have it tomorrow.  I'm going to put an old Japanese made Tasco World Class 3.5x10x50 scope on it using a Nikon M-223 base.  Looking forward to getting a real coyote killer worked up.  No more having 2 or 3 of them come in and only being able to put one on the ground!
