Just picked up a Ruger 1911!  What do you guys like to load up for range days? Powder\bullet type?

[#1]
W231 under a 185 or 200 LSWC.  Good luck finding w231 though.

[#2]
I too use W-231.  Five grains pushes a 230 real nice.

I was using bullseye with 230gr LRN bullets last time I loaded.
1/21/2014 6:27:24 PM EDT
[#4]
My very first reloads are 230lrn and 4.5gn of bullseye

Got a little unburnt powder when firing so I might back off to 4gn.

I have been loading a 200gr LSWC over 4.5gr of WST for over 10 years for match shooting. Muzzle flip is very manageable and it is a very accurate load.

WST  is the only way to drive 45acp lead loads

200gr SWC is the way to go

WST is great for jacketed too.   Even up to the max load is a soft shooter.  Plus, I can actually find WST in stock.

My SR1911 will eat anything round-nosed, but it doesn't like the flat nosed stuff.  I'm still fiddling with those however.
Right out of the box, the recoil spring is stout; unless you want to swap it out for a lighter spring, it may not want to cycle reduced power loads.

200 grain round nosed (plated) over 6.3 grains Universal Clays, 6.5 grains Unique, or 7.0 grains Auto Comp.  These aren't 'light', but they're not screamin' hot either.
Cartridge overall length 2.250"

230 grain FMJ, 6.0 grains Universal Clays, 2.260" COL.  Although not quite book 'max', those deliver a very gratifying thud
As always, start low and work your way up.

Yes it does.  Works great with the LRN bullets I picked up from RMR.

The original 230 gr FMJ factory load was 5 gr of Bullseye and it works real well for me.  4.5 gr of Bullseye with the 230 gr LRN works well.  Around 5 gr of W 231 with the 200 LSWC is a good load.  W 231 also works well with the other bullets.  Titegroup can work well with .45 ACP.   I don't use it very often so don' t have any loads in my head, but the 185 JHP can be an extremely accurate bullet in this caliber.  Check any load against published data.

My most accurate loads have used either Unique or Bullseye over the years.  I've used 700X and AA#5 and they work, but not as well as the older powders.

200gr or less bullets excellent range fodder.

200gr fn hp's

Loaded with 8.1gr of power pistol turn those bullets into p+ hammers.

Or a simple h&g 68 clone (200gr swc/190gr swchp) with 4.0gr og bullseye for bullseye/target work.

There's a whole world out there for the extremely popular 45acp. Something a little different, 175gr hollow base swc's.

Glow in the dark 225gr swaged hp's made from 40s&w cases

100+ years & millions of 1911 users/reloaders/testers later, you'll find something.

230 gr. jacketed or plated RN with 6.0-6.1 grains of Unique.

Used W231 for the longest than switched to WST.

200SWC over Unique still haven't decided which charge is best.

4.6 Grns Bullseye under a 200grn LSWC. Very accurate and mild!

This. Except I use HP38, which is the same as W231 but cheaper!

211gr. RNFP (Lee Mould) sized .452 with TAC1 lube with 4.5 grs. titegroup
It feeds great in my Springfield XD and seems to "hang" better on the steel plates.

230 grain FMJ over 3.8 grains of regular old Clays. Accurate and low recoil. ~600FPS out of a 5 inch 1911.

For those using WST would you mind posting some loadings you have done?

I have a pound of it and would like to work up some plated 230 grain loads.

Thanks!

I haven't loaded 230gr yet, but I do load a lot using a 200gr lead semi-wadcutter.

My load is a 200gr LSWC over 4.5gr of WST. It is accurate in all of my 1911s and I have several friends who use the same load in theirs. It seems to be a very accurate consistant load in about all 1911s.

I worked up to just under max with 230gr FMJ.   It's still pretty gentle that way...  good enough that I was able to win my division in the last GSSF match with it.

You Sir have picked one of the best pistols and caliber for reloading
My favorite is 4.8 of 231 for target and 200 SWC cast boolits (people who shoot Cast like to call then that !!)
Now you have to get some reloading manuels,I like Lyman.Speer (cheapest) and Hornady.
Start with min listed loads and work up to see what your pistol likes.
This is a very light load that my 12 year old shoots like a champ.
You can also consider plated bullets like Berrys,Rainer,Extreme
You can shoot a little cleaner and faster with plated (Al Gore told me it's better for the enviorment)

Was using 4.2 gn Titegroup under a 230 gn Missouri Softball.  Have now switched to 4.8 gn of W231 with the same bullet.  Works well in my Taurus and Remington 1911s.

185 swc over about 5.6 Unique.  But I can't find Unique anywhere.....

Just loaded ten each of 230 FMJ-RN under 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 4.6 and 4.7 of Titegroup.  Hope it warms up enough later this week to try them.

My current range load is 5.6 grains of ZIP under a 230gr LRN.    ZIP and #5 are my go to powders for 45acp.     works great with my 1911s and my G21.

WST and 231 in most respect "mirror" each other.. work around with 231 data, and put them over a chrono..   I think the lead loads I make using RCBS  201 SWC and 230 RN molds, with bearing surface being idential, I load same either bullet.

I think my stash is at 5gr WST and chrono 950 FPS from 10 1/4" Uzi barrel in 45acp (Genuine IMI 45acp with 6 groove LH twist)

Actually HP38 and W231 mirror each other much better than WST and 231.  Search the internet and you will find loads for each.   It's pretty safe to start with 3.0 grains and work you way up using a chronograph.

5.5gr of bullseye under a 185gr rn. Has been my favorite.

230gr Precision Delta FMJ and Hornady's 230gr HP XTP are a pretty good choice for IDPA/IPSC work.

4.9gr Bullseye under 200gr Lasercast swc (H+G 68 clone) shoots as straight as you could ask, at a boringly consistent 850 fps...

My current favorite load for the past year or so, 7.6 gr of True Blue under a 200gr MB averaging 841 fps out of my XD Service model.

I load 5.0 gr of WW231 with both 200 gr lead SWC and 230 gr round nose lead, both work well.
