I did a search, including two years of the archives and found nothing. I'd like to make some blanks for launching golf balls. Has anyone tried this? Is it possible without a die to crimp the neck? Feeding and extraction are not important to me. I just want as much safe distance as I can get with the golf balls.

Yes, I could just buy blanks but I'd like to try making some if it can be done safely.

Yes, golf ball launchers are a load of fun.

Blank Crimp Dies

Unless you plan to make hundreds of blanks, it is considerably

Cheaper to just buy several boxes.

I've heard people say you can just pull bullets from live rounds, pour the powder back in, and cram tissue paper in there. Back when I was younger and dumber I got away with doing that with some 7.62x39mm using a dowel to press in the tissue paper.. It worked but now that I'm a little more cautious I wonder how wise that was. It would be really easy to throw a near max charge of a voluminous powder and use the seating die to press tissue paper. Of course you would have a severely compressed and erratically compressed charge....

ETA: I found some DAG 5.56mm blanks here for $60/30 round box. That's reasonable but I'd still like to make my own if it's possible to do it safely without a crimp die.

I've seen a local Arfcommer use "a bit of powder" and a leatherman tool to crimp them on the firing line for golf-ball launching. Worked like a charm.

I make them to launch a modified Israeli practice grenade. You must use a different powder, something faster burning like Red Dot or Bullseye. I use a small wad of cotton tucked into the case neck to retain the powder. Mind you, I have to single load these and I insert them into the chamber by hand. They will not cycle the action and they barely move the bolt carrier when fired.
Small amounts of either mentioned powder will throw the practice grenade about 150 feet high ( I use it to shoot antenna wires over trees). An M-200 blank will launch it out of sight.
IM me if you want specifics.

ETA- BTW, clean rifle thouroughly before shooting regular ammo. Blanks are dirty and you want to make sure there is no cotton or other obstruction in the barrel.

That's really cool. I need more coax.

I use 7 grains of Unique and crimp the case neck with the serrated portion of my pliers, it's a great way to use split neck ,dented body, trimmed too short and otherwise unusable brass.  FYI the DAG plastic blanks launch golf balls farther than I can see (unless a water splashdown is involved)

I use between 12gr and 13 gr of Unique with a BFA and launching . Launches app. 40-50 yds . I crimp but I don't see why a cotton wad over the powder wouldn't work also .

So you think a pistol powder is better suited for the purpose? I have AA7, AA9, W231, and 800-X on hand. What do you think would work best?

Can someone post a pic of the pliers crimp they did?

Not familiar with the listed powders, but you need a fast burning powder. Like I mentioned, I use Bullseye and Red Dot. Two of the fastest burning pistol powders. Slow burning powders won't burn too well because the blank doesn't develop enough pressure.
Upon looking in the Hornady manual, Win 231 is listed for .45acp. I would start there.
IM inbound.

Win 231.  Loaded correctly it will give a nice flash as well.

I've read where someone was using softened wax to seal off the neck. Most of the wax would get blown out, but they would just clean the barrel when done.

Just crimp.  No wax is needed.  6 gr will put the ball out about 75 yards.

Would 6gr cycle the bolt or is that an issue with single load golf balls?

Any load that would cycle the bolt would cause so much back splatter in your face it wouldn't be pretty.  It would probably damage something as well.

Single shot is the way to go.

I made up 3 using 6gr of bullseye to try tomorrow.    The crimp looks pretty bad, so I put a drop of hot glue on the end to seal the case.

Bullseye  or 231.  It will approximate military blanks.  Blanks will not cycle the action on semiautos without a restriction in the barrel and the golf ball isn't enough.

Fingernail polish is more commonly used but elmers glue will do just fine as well.
