I have a 100 dollar Cabelas card to use towards a chronograph.   I know that there are more expensive units.  I can put some money towards one at Cabelas.  Any reason why this one is not on par?

Or, if I have to go elsewhere, what do you recommend.   I'm not wanting to spend more than 200 and if that's not possible, I can join a local gun club and use theirs.

The only issue I have with my cheap chrony($70) is that it rarely reads any of my 17 WSM or 17 Hornet bullets. I have a magnetospeed

I saw that one.   What I like about the beta is the remote LCD.

I have the Shooting chrony beta master and it does the job. The remote display is nice to have.

I have a Shooting Chrony Beta Master and it works great. I bought it used 8years ago, I have no complaints, if it takes a dump I will buy another same model. I have sent a gillion round over it.

Only thing I changed was the screens, I bought the CE one piece screens and rods from midway($8), much simpler.(the rods need to be turned down btw)

The Beta Chrony works great, but I recommend getting it with the printer.  The reason for that is simpler operation that although isn't intuitive, it's better than trying to remember how to use the buttons on the display.

Chrony has the instructions for all of their units on line now and I recommend reading through them to get an idea of my reasons.

I recently down loaded them and have a feeble start on a rewrite for the 3rd or 4th time.

I almost got the Master Beta(LOL), but I got the ProChrono instead. I almost always shoot suppressed, so I can shoot very close to the chrony(no muzzle blast) so I had no need for a removable display. I also read better reviews on the ProChrono. You can also buy($50) or build(<$20) a cable to hook it up to a laptop if you want.

ETA: And yea, the ProChrono is WAY simpler to use.
$93 on Amazon

I like the idea of the computer software on that one.  Does the laptop control the chrono?    Only problem is lugging a laptop to the range when I already have my hands full of ammo, guns, etc.  But I like that it has software.

regarding the cable,  How do you make your own?

The Beta Master also hooks to a computer, I like this type of thing and yet can cannot find one reason to do it. I have the ballistic printer also but seldom use it, though it is very handy for the reasons Aeroe mentioned, my first one died and I bought another(walmart.com had the best price on the net btw).
I generally write each shot down in my data book and often they are different loads one shot to the next so writing it down by hand is the most practical for me.

The Chrony stores data until you can get to a computer.  I expect all of them operate that way.

I use an alpha chrony with the extra monitor. Its one button so that isn't too hard to work.  I'm not sure if I read the instructions but not much harder than one button the push and an on/off feature.

Instead of buying a printer buy a nice notebook and a pack of pens. Writ down date, weather, sun light, time of day, all the components, gun, maybe even your attitude when you were loading.  Much more information than a printer can give you and it's going to all get written down eventually.

The remote is part of the "Master" package.   So The Beta does not have it, the Beta Master does.

Personally I'd save a little and get the Alpha Master instead.  The extra bucks for the Beta is not worth it IMHO.  I just write down everything and type it into excel.  That way you have a better record.

Save yourself the hassles of FAR too mud time spent researching what competitive shooters are buying; at least those without unlimited funds.

Get the Pro Chrono and be happy, with a few more $ in your wallet to boot.

I bought the cheap one because I figure if I spent a bunch of money on something I'm going to be shooting over top of that I'd eventually hit it.

And I did.

BTW... I have a 1911 that hits really low... what type of sights should I get to fix that?

I agree with this, but I'll still recommend a printer.

I just ordered the converter module to make a USB interface cable through Amazon today.  I got free shipping, but it looks like it'll be a month before it arrives.
