I know the Black Hills 50 grn TSX bullet is limited to the Black Hills line. What .224 TSX bullets available to reloaders make good defense loads and what loadings have you developed? Thanks!

Multi-Tool Personally I would not shoot the $$Barnes$$ line of bullets for SD. But, if you must, buy the 50gr Barnes TSX and go for it. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/912424/barnes-triple-shock-x-bullets-22-caliber-224-diameter-50-grain-hollow-point-flat-base-lead-free-box-of-50 |
| I have loaded up 70gr TSX with Varget, here is Barnes load data. Personally I prefer the 77gr Sierra for defense, cheaper and less chance of over penetration. |

But to answer the OP: Any bullet in the TSX line should perform well. |

The regular TSX tends to shed petals going through glass - the Black Hills 50gr version has thicker petals to help them stay on, but the trade-off is that the minimum velocity required for expansion is higher. Any of the TSX bullets are excellent for hunting or home defense. Only downside is the cost. |

Don't know. I heard it through Doc Roberts, I think, but I've seen posts from Black Hills reps about it. Could this be just another Internet Myth? No, unless you think Dr. Roberts and reps from Black Hills who post here are lying. Do some research. |

This load shoots particularly well. Here's a representative 10 shot group at 50 yds. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k162/sfdude/P1010136.jpg Care to share the details? Charge, rifle specs, etc.? I've got a box of 55gr'ers I've ben meaning to load up. |

No, unless you think Dr. Roberts and reps from Black Hills who post here are lying. Do some research. OK! I took your advice and did some research. I contacted Barnes with the following e-mail. I have read that the Barnes 50gr TSX loaded into Black Hills 5.56 ammo is manufactured especially for Black Hills and not available to Handloaders. I could use some clarification on this, please. Is your 50gr TSX #22440 a different bullet than the 50gr TXS loaded into Black Hills 5.56 ammunition? Thanks Steve There Reply. Steve, Sorry for the delay. In regards to the 50gr TSX bullet we sale and also that Black Hills loads there is nothing different from the two. Well, if we're posting pics, Here's some of my Barnes 55gr. loads that I did for my son, the State Trooper. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k162/sfdude/P1010127-1.jpg Does he carry handloads on duty? |

I was a devotee of Barnes TSXs, MRXs, XLCs, etc. I have had one too many pencil through at range, especially in .284" ,and have switched back to lead core bullets. For shoulder shots on bull elk and moose, they are second to none. I have had too many caliber sized exit wounds for my taste, and have permanent change, because life isn't all shoulder shots. YMMV. |
