Black powder is "good powder" too - and also not popular with the "newer" reloaders.

Fact is, Unique is over 100 years old. Believe it or not, powder companies have managed to improve powder technology tremendously during a century of development. "Older" reloaders still buy it new for retail prices because they are just stuck in their ways, I guess. There are MUCH better powders out there for the money (when you can find them). I tried it and I tell "newer" folks to use almost anything but Unique, because it was smokey, filthy, smelly, position sentitive and temp sensitive (universal is a good alternative). OTOH, I do agree with DryFlash to the extent that you should use any serviceable powder you happen to have (at least until supply picks up and you can choose something better). Maybe use up that Unique for lead-bullet loads? (they make a mess no matter what powder you use). |

Unique is ok in certain applications. If you use it at the high charge end it burns good, if you use it downloaded and it will filth up a gun in no time in my experience. Even the "new and improved" version. it may be safe downloaded but it is not satisfactory in my opinion. The burn rate just not right. Downloaded with cast lead with lubed bullets and you got yourself a smoke screen!
some good .357 magnum loads or full power 9mm and I'm sure it'd be fine, maybe not the best but workable. i was growing fond of some of the newer winchester powders but like a lot of guys i'm using what i have on hand and not feeding the panic. |

What is the going rate for Unique now? $28 when you can find it? By that I guess you did ok.
Of course if your buddy bought them in 1992 they were $10 or $12 each-just saying I don't use a whole lot of Unique these days but when powder is hard to find it is a comfort to have some because I know I can load most any cast bullet from 380acp to 45/70 and still have some left over for shotgun shells |
