I am fairly new to reloading and I have noticed that a lot of my Federal 223 brass is not to the minimum or max case length.  I have been resizing them and then checking them in a Wilson case gauge and they have been fitting in the case gauge perfectly.  Well today I went and tested some of the rounds that I have loaded and I am surprised that once that I checked the case length again after firing they are still below trim length.  I was expecting them to be longer but they are not.  I am missing something or is this normal on fired brass.  If they are fired out of my rifle and they are shorter then trim length is that a sign that my Daniel Defense barrels are not head spaced correctly?

Trim length gets longer after  full length sizing.  Trim length has nothing to do with  head clearance or head space.

Yes this.

I see this mistake made way too often. Most of the time a case will get shorter when fired because when the body expands it draws the length in.

its normal on federal .223 which tends to be shorter than trim to length brass from the factory. once fired is usually under 1.75

Federal 223 brass is always short, by which I mean shorter than the "trim to" length.

My least favorite headstamp in 223.

Yep. OP. Measure after you have FL sized.

That makes sense now that you mentioned it.  I have since resized a few and they are with in specs now.  Thanks everyone for clearing that up for me.

Just loaded my first dedicated Fed brass. As others said it was short at the get go. Also primer pockets were very tight - had to break out my PP swaging die. It was free and once fired so I'll keep it!

As stated Fed brass is shorter than 1.75 from the get go.  It's good brass and will stretch into trim length after a firing or two.
