| I saw guy at the recycling center with coffee cans of lead shot he picked up at some skeet range, dont know how he managed to pick it up and clean it but I was wondering what you would need to add to this if you melted it down for pistol bullets? He had about 10 of them when I saw him and he said he'd be back when he got some more. Is all lead shot the same or some harder or softer? |

You sure it was lead? |
| I overheard the seller asking if they were still taking lead and they said yes. I wonder if it was worth the work but I never checked on what they were paying for lead. Thinking back a lot of it looked like 00 buck and a friend tells me of range used by LEOs where they shoot into a dirt bank in a large arroyo and have used the place for years, this has to be the place where the shot came from. The other ranges are for trap and skeet and the small shot would be harder to clean. I assumed he got it at a skeet range cause theres one within 3 miles of the recycling place. |

The lead shot is Lead with a bit of Arsenic. The arsenic is used to make the shot harder much like antimony is used in bullets.
You can use this lead, but you will want to add some tin to the mix, otherwise it won't cast well. Look at some of the larger cast bullet handbooks for more information about alloying for better bullets. Hard bullets can be shot faster without leading, but are less likely to perform well on game. The best use for the reclaimed shot, however, is practice shotgun loads. |

How big was the shot?
Reclaimed shot is more valuable than lead to the right person. Sometimes people on the castboolits forum will be happy to trade bullet casting lead in ingots for reclaimed shot if it's in decent shape (not too dirty). A picture of the shot in a can would help us here. |

lead is lead, the dirt will float to the top when the shot is melted and can be scraped off. I use reclaimed shot exclusively for my skeet loads, was about 1/2 the price of new shot at the time. This company reclaimed the shot at my skeet and trap club http://www.leadusreclaimllc.com/ |
