I have found a local store that sells 7.62x51 ammo, and I'm stocking up.
I'm interested in getting into long range shooting so I need to know the ammo's BC, can anyone help me out? ATI (really turkish) 7.62x51 150gr FMJ M80 Here's a link that gave me muzzle velocity & energy, but I cannot find any calculation or measurements. http://www.the-armory.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/product1445.html Again, I'm new to this calculation system and would like any assistance possible Thank you |

I appreciate the responses (even the corolla one)
So the M80 ball has standard dimensions, but varies based upon its weight (gr) right? What is wrong with an M80? What are better types for a 308 (7.62)? Any other basic bullet information I should know or that you can refer me to? Again, I am very new with this and am trying to learn. Right now 308 (7.62) ammo is a pain to find (regardless of reasonable price) I know it won't be ideal, but it'll at least be a good stepping stone to learn from until ammo comes more available or better priced (if ever) |

IMO, if you are really interested in long range shooting (600-800yds) then now is the time to get a bolt gun with a big barrel, a big fat scope, some sand bags, and just see if you can hit the gong at that distance. As stated above, 7.62 x 51 can be a good long range round, but running M80-like comm'l stuff out of a short barreled gas gun is not going to demonstrate that attribute.
How are you doing with that CMMG 16" bbl at 100, 200, 300 yds? What is your best group, so far? |

JBM lists Winchester Q3130 147 gr. (M80 Ball) at G1 = .421
The G7 BC is around .200. Like others have mentioned, M80 ball isn't very good long range, accuracy type ammo. Look for some Federal Gold Medal 168 or 175 gr, as that will give you a pretty good baseline of what you and your rifle can do. Even the American Eagle OTM 168 gr would be worth trying. Hornady & Black Hills also have some good "match" loads, it's just a matter of finding any of it in stock. |
