For those that reload it, do you find that you need to trim it like you would with bottleneck cases?

Also, for those who cast for it, how hot can you load your cast boolits without gas checks before they start leading?

I haven't had to trim any of mine yet but they don't have that many re loads on them yet.

You'll lose accuracy before leading will be a problem with a plain base bullet. About 1600 FPS or so is where things start to fall off. Some have gone hotter with success but personally my shoulder doesn't care much for those velocities.

Big heavy cast bullets don't need a lot of velocity to be extremely effective on whatever it is you're shooting at.

I trimmed mine with the lee trimmer when i first got them and the one group on its 4th loading still haven't stretched. I read a lot of stuff and 1600-1700 seems to be the leading point some makers claim higher speeds with no leading but why risk it. I do use the 350 hornady rd. nose at 1950 fps as my hunting load though and friggn love it. There are lots of sites out there with guys who know tons about the 45-70 but marlin owners and cast boolits are the 2 ive learned the most on good luck if you have more ?s ask

I treat them the same as revolver brass, since they are both straight wall rimmed cases.

Trim and debur first loading and your done.

There should be no speed limit in cast lead .45-70 provided your bullet fits the barrel and your alloy is at least as hard as air cooled wheel weights (11-12 BHN).

I have shot air cooled wheel weights @ 2000FPS + out of my 358 Win and got zero leading.

Half way decent groups too.   Shot these off the back of a truck at 100 yards:

If you plan on loading any Hornady Flex tips you will have to trim about .125 off for proper function in a lever gun.

No need to trim.

Your shoulder will give out long before your barrel starts to lead.
