In light of my squib load and barrel bulge incident, I have gone back and weighed all the bullets I have made so far.
I found that over 50 were @ 3-4 grains less than my average known load of 257.5gr. .40s&w Running 3.5gr of american select with a magnum primer under a 180gr lead bullet. Every one of the PMC cases I loaded is under, and the rest are federal. Some of the federal are stamped "nt" On the headstamp. The federals are from a range that sells the federal white box "range and target" ammo. Could thinner cases be the weight difference, and would it be that much? I know im a noob, but I can't see me missing 50+ cases without powder.

| Different case weights for different manufacurers. Also not uncommon for plus/minus several grains within same manufacturer. "NT" means non toxic primers - and if loading 45 acp it means you probably have small primer pockets instead of the usual large primer pockets for 45 acp. Why don't you put the 50 in a separate box and when you go to the range load them up and shoot! If a squib, and bullet lodged in barrel, use a wooden dowel and small hammer to tap the bullet back toward the breech - really very simple to do (wil need a brass rod for 9mm as i/4" dowel won't fit) |

The fact that your powder charge is only 3.5gr makes it impractical to try and sort out potential "light" loads by weighing the loaded cartridge. You could easily see differences of +/- 5gr just from bullet weight combined with different case weights.
I think you are stuck with having to pull them to be sure. How did you bulge your barrel? Did you fire another round with a bullet stuck in the bore? |

I did seperate them, and going to shoot those at a slow rate. The squib came up in an idpa match last night, and I was mid stage and reverted back to light primer strike mode. Just racked it and fired again not thinking. the pmc and federal cases are @the same weight, but I have other federal cases that are the 257.5 area. Maybe the range and target brass is thinner.
Guess I have an excuse to go to the range again... |
