My lyman manual says the col for 55gr .223 loads is 2.26". The hodgdon site lists it at 2.200. Which is it? Where will I run into pressure issues? My 55gr load is sitting right at 2.195-2.20 for my AR. Wolf .223 primer,25g H335,PMC brass and 55gr fmj.

Either of those COL s will work as long as you have worked up your load.

I run almost all of my AR loads at just under magazine length, no matter what the load data says.

Ive worked up from 23 to 25 gr with this load combo. 25gr gave the best results. Im just scared shitless of running into overpressure.

rifle rounds in my experience don't have pressue issues when the projectile is seated deeper.  Pistol rounds do.

I've shot more than my fair share of rounds that had the bullet set back from misfeeds, I just chamber them by hand and pop them off, beats pulling the bullet with a bullet puller, etc

For bullet shapes with the ogive farther from the base of the bullet, COL will be shorter. As has been mentioned, rifle rounds build pressure as you approach the lans. For 55 FMJs, just work to fit the mag.

Correct.  If you load long and your bullet is close to the lands, then you can have increased pressure issues.  Something that is very difficult to do in AR and stay under Mag length.  Decreasing OAL in your 223 will not cause any increase in pressure.

There are a few "rules-of-thumb" when selecting an OAL'
It should fit the mag.

It should have at least one bullet diameter seated into the case.  In the 223/5.56 that would be .224 inches of bullet seated into the neck.  Not written in stone, just a Rule-of-thumb.

If your bullet has a cannelure and you wish to crimp into the cannelure, seat to mid cannelure and forget what it measures.

The round must feed reliably.

Forget what OAL is listed in the manuals, they will all be different even with the same bullets used.  It is only a guide to let the handloader know what they used it is Not a recommendation or a requirement.  Hell some manuals don't even list the OAL tested it is that unimportant.

I never worry about about measured oal, i load so they fit in the mag also, with a hair to spare.
