I have a compact 1911 chambered in 45. What powder(s) should I be looking into? Do compacts required different powders to function at their best as compared to a full size?
Looking for clean burning for practice loads. So does not have to be a superfast load for what I am wanting them for. Will be shooting 200gr Lead SWC and 230gr FMJ and Lead RN bullets. |

Sir, I use W231 with lead 230gr RN bullets in all my 1911s which include a Kimber SIS Ultra, Colt Series 70, and a few other full size 1911s. HTH, 7zero1. |

Compacts require stiffer loads, stiffer meaning velocity higher than standard practice loads. Keep velocity above 850 fps to stay in time with shorter slide cyclic rate.
Fast burning powders work best within Officers length timing, like Bullseye or Hodgdons Clays for example. Regards, dc. |

There are many. The barrel being short really don't effect the 45 much. I use 2 of the old standards, Unique and Bullseye. Unique is a little slower than Bullseye. My normal "plinking" load with the lead 200gr SWC uses Unique as does my 230gr hard ball load. |

So I am going to be using 230 FMJ and 185 JHP bullets. I picked up a 1# of Unique but it is listed in manuals as a powder with the highest powder charge to reach same velocity as others. So I am wandering what powder will give same velocity using less charge? WST, Clays, Bullseye maybe? SInce it is practice/plinking I do not need match grade accuracy or price point on components. Just need something to get me started while using the least amount of powder to lower my costs to shoot more
I have a local dealer who is getting over 200# of powder next week on top of the 75+ he has on hand now so now is the time for me to decide real fast so I can get a couple different ones to try |
