A friend has offered to share half of a 8#der of Varget if I will pick it up.

My question is what would be a safe container to use to pickup and

store this wonderful powder gift?

Either a clean, empty old powder container, or an opaque, clean (preferably new) plastic container with a nice tight lid is what I would use.  Make sure you label it clearly and permanently, and I'd probably put down the lot number and such as well

I would only use a container(s) that originally were made to hold gun powder. The bottles that vendors sell the surplus powder in are specifically designed for storing gun powder. It mostly has to do with preventing static electricity build up.

I always have a few of the Hodgdon bottles saved up for such occasions.
