I am going to start working on some loads for my RRA upper that I picked up back in December.
I have some Hornady 325 FTX bullets and some lil gun and H4198 on hand.
Anybody have some good starting points for this bullet with either of these powders?
I have read that pressure signs are very hard to see with this round and I just don't want to over do it.
Thanks

Here is some data from the .458 Socom site, work up your loads carefully. From what I have been told you will not see presure signs untill you are way over charged.

here's some data I've gleaned from posts on the 458 Socom forum.

This is good information, but just to be clear these loads are very close to, or at maximum. I've settled on a COAL (Cartridge OverAll Length) of around 2.20" to 2.22" with this bullet.

For Lil Gun, start at around 27 grains and work up to 29, maybe 30 as an absolute max. I personally think 28 to 28.5 grains is about right - no reason to push it.

For H-4198, start at around 36 grains and work up to around 40. Not too many people have reported using H-4198 yet, so there's no real consensus yet on where the max is with this powder. There's more information with IMR-4198 but they're not interchangeable.

So far I have got my dies adjusted and made a dummy round with a COAL of 2.20 with this bullet.
I am going to load a few today but probably won't get time to try any.

I got out today and tried out some lil gun loads with the 325 ftx.

Started at 27.0 and worked up to 29.0.

Sorry no pictures but I got the best grouping with 28.5 grains of powder.

My recipe is 325 FTX w' IMR 4198 and CCI 350's.  2.20 oal.

I started low and slow and worked up using a chronograph and signs of primer damage to warn me when I was getting too hot.

I am shooting a Wilson Combat .458 upper.  16" barrel

I ended up at 38.0 grains putting me at 1800 fps. This may be too hot for some rifles here but is very accurate in my gun with no pressure signs.

The .458 Socom won't show pressure signs until it is waaaaay too hot. The primers flatten around 45k psi. Max design for the socom is 35k.

Might want to get someone with quickload to run that load and get an estimate of your pressure.

QL seems to be way off for that particular combination of components - not sure why (it says 35.1 grains is 102.4% case fill when actually around 38 grains is closer to 100% case fill). I've shot many rounds of that same load with good results, though I'm only getting 1,720 fps out of it.

(referring to rocco1695's load)
