So your press SHOULD eject flawlessly either loaded or unloaded shells. There are two possible issues causing this under most normal circumstances. I had this issue on new press, new dies and called hornady.

So here is the discovery.

The die on the left, nice shiny and very machined looking, the one on the right stamped with Hornady is rougher looking. The one on the right is an older version of the shellplates. This started with my #16 which i had the luck of having two of. But I also had other dies, 2, 8, and 10...the 2, and 8...shiny...eject beautifully. The 10...doesnt like to eject. and #10 is the hornady stamped rougher looking one also, so confirms it even moreso.

now looking from the side you see nice sharp lines on the newer plate on the left. No so on the older plate on the right.

clean crisp edges again...

vs. non crisp edges

The next common issue you can run across is your spring is not seated in the grove just in front of the shell loading station. When you finish mounting the plate you need to push the spring down into this grove along the entire line, just start at the LAST station put your finger on it and operate the press moving your finger along the entire groove until the spring is fully seated. see the next few pictures for details. Also note this is the newer press where the ejection is a nub and not the piece of wire you have to pull back down over the plate.

this is where it begins to rise up out of the groove on its way to station 1.

So if a guy has some shellplates that don't like to eject, is Hornady gonna replace them?  Because I've got several.

One thing I've noticed, particuarly on .45acp, is that Hornady brass has extractor grooves of a smaller diameter, and will eject from the press just fine.

PMC and others, not so much.

Personally I can't speak FOR them. However as a consumer my expectations are high. I don't mind you charging a fair price for a well made product, but i expect it to work unless you explicitly say before i purchase it something to the effect i'm going to need to modify/customize it for use. Otherwise i'll throw it right back on your doorstep and walk from your brand likely forever.

I would just call them up like I did, explain your issue with the shellplates. I'd be suprised if they didn't ask you to send them all in for replacement. Do you have shiny ones as well that you can confirm those eject correctly?

As for brass....in my opinion if it's a .223 die i don't care who makes it...should eject. that was their intended design, period..it best work. I'm hard yes, but today so many people charge outrageous prices for crap quality, you make it right, correct design flaws at no cost to your customers, then you'll forever get my praise.and money on your product line.
