I inherited an old PACT chronograph and would like to test a few of my reloaded rounds to see how I'm doing.

Problem is the public range around here won't let me set up a chronograph. Now I have access to 40 acres of land owned by my wife's relatives. It has a nice hill that would make a good backstop, and I can go shooting there if I want to. However it's mostly all hardwoods not an open field.

So, will a chronograph work in a wooded area? I'm thinking it might have trouble reading if there are any shadows on the sky screens.

I usually don't use the screens unless it is sunny out. I have a Chroney. You will just have to try it. If you have a .22 rifle take it with you and test with it. That way you won't waist your center fire ammo if it don't work.

You'll have trouble in the shade without using artificial light.

I use Chrony's  110V AC illumination kit all the time in my indoor chronograph range.  I thought they were going to come out with battery powered, diffused, LED string lit kit, but don't know if it made it to market.  That would be ideal for your woods setting.

I think I would try it in the woods anyway, just to see what happens.  Look for a cloudy bright day around 11AM to 1PM.  I have the same problem you do with use of the Chrony at regulated ranges around here.

Try using a piece of white poster board over the top
