You shouldn't be breaking the pins. Something is wrong with your process.

Ensure cases aren't Berdan primed and stop the handle of the press immediately if you encounter more than normal resistance.

Find out why case isn't decapping. Don't just "power through" if things don't feel right.

Check the decapping stem and be sure it isn't bent. If so contact Lee for another.

Don't over tighten the decapping stem, it will raise up and not break when something is incorrect.

Fix your die if you need parts, and improve your technique.

I have 3 of these and no broken pins here.

thanks, cases are definitely not berdan they are military surplus 308 some are extra hard to decapp the crimp
is very tight I am probably getting about 4 or 5 per 1000 that the primer tears apart rather than popping out I will try your

suggestion about loosening up the collet I guess its better than breaking the pin

I use a RCBS universal decapping die and recently went through about 600+ .308 military brass with crimped .308 primers and did not have any problems. As the directions point out, lower the decapping pin enough to remove the primer.

What press are you using?

You might want to try Lee's manual decapper. I put mine in wood blocks.

You place decapping pin in flashole and hit with a mallet, case decapped.

But you will encounter some cases that refuse to give up their spent primer.

I've used Lee decappers and have never broken one yet.  I noticed the one in my 45ACP die set is slightly bent but taking into consideration it has decapped thousands upon thousands of rounds I'm not too surprised.

The only reason the lee pins will break is if you have the retaining nut too tight. It is designed to push up instead of break

If that's a problem I know dillon makes a universal decamping die

The universal decapping die does not hold the case in alignment as well as a caliber specific die.  This is what breaks pins.

Lee decapping pins are needle bearings and while very hard, are also brittle.  They are strong but not unbreakable.  AFAIK, you cannot remove the broken part and replace.

I agree with dryflash that you shouldn't be breaking pins. I've been using a Lee universal decapper for at least a decade on both pistol and small and large rifle ( including crimped primers) and haven't broken a pin yet.
