So I was resizing some brass and noticing that my shell holder seemed 'loose', comparatively speaking to others I have used. I mean loose as in the movement/ position of the brass in the shell holder.

I noticed as I would raise the ram the shell casing would move slightly forward out of being seated all the way back in the 'mouth' of the shell holder... resulting in it only being held by the sides of the shell holder (which on a couple casings started to bend the rim of the case a little, yes they are properly lubed). Anyways as I rotated the shell holder the brass would shift position, which led me to believe it is out of spec and not concentric around its base.

See what you all think (picture below)... my calipers tell me it was cut slightly to one side more than the other but naturally it is hard to be sure of the varience I am seeing on the caliper due to the shape of the rounded shell holder.

It is an RCBS shell holder in a Lee classic cast press. Seems others say they have no issues with RCBS shell holders or RCBS shell holders in Lee press. Debating replace with another RCBS or maybe I should look to a Redding press type shell holder? Am I overthinking this?

true test would be to get another shell holder and if it works then assume the old one is bad.  I'd call RCBS and explain our problem and they'll send you a new one for free

Also are you sure you have the right shell holder for your cartridge, you didn't mention either in your post

I've had that happen before.  Mine was too tall.  I was able to grind down to the correct height.

Sorry, should have included that... 10 RCBS and LC 5.56.

You can see the difference in each side of the shell holder in the picture... Right side is machined smaller than left side.

Is the ram perfectly aligned with the die?  If not, the die will move the case into alignment.

Just to follow up if this is searched later.

Picked up a Redding shell holder since local place had it in stock... problem solved, quality piece.

Also I emailed RCBS just to ask them if I could send it back and have them check it (call it piece of mind, curiousity, etc.), I did not mind paying the postage if needed. Got a very prompt reply and a very nice customer service person who responded one is already being sent out at no charge to replace it! It is pretty well proven RCBS is a quality company and stuff happens cause its not a perfect world but they get a big thumbs up on customer service. I would not hesitate to buy from them in the future.

I knew RCBS would pull through for you.

Use the out of spec one as a target or something, make sure it doesn't slip into the reloading world again
