So I've been working my way through several thousand Lake City 1x and this is the second bushing I've broken in perhaps 5,000.

I contacted RCBS the first time the bushing broke and they were great as always sending me a replacement at not cost. The problem is the RCBS tech I spoke to had never seen this happen before and I'd rather not keep pestering them for replacements.

I know these are still relatively new, but has anyone else run into this problem?  Maybe my unit is faulty?  Anyone have any solutions?

TIA

New bushing on left, broken one on right.

I would continue to talk to RCBS when you have this issue.  If there is a problem with the design that needs to be fixed, they'll never know if you don't tell them.

For those of us with the Dillon swager, please tell us the function of the bushing so we can follow along.

GWhis should be along shortly with some useful help.

Jon, I reviewed this tool, but you have way more experience with it now than I do.  I've done a few hundred so far, and no problems or wear yet.  Also I'm not a machinest, or tool maker.....others who are may have answers I'd never think about.  Nevertheless....here's what input I can give....

Allow me to first answer Dryflash2's question:  The bushing is what guides the swaging head to the pocket.  It's visible in the following picture.  It appears to be a steel bushing?  Jon can tell better than I can since he has handled them.  The inside surface has machine marks that makes a sound when you run the swaging head back and forth.  Not sure what the design idea there is, but it I'd wager it ought to be greased and regreased doing the numbers the Jon is running.

There is slight play between the swaging head and the bushing, but there is lots of play where the head connects to the cam, shown in the second picture below.  The looseness of the cam connection is to my mind, to prevent exactly the sort of thing Jon's picture illustrates.  I can't even imagine how the bushing could wear and break that way unless it is cracked already when it is driven into the hole, and later gives away after a "few thousand" swages!  The bushing is factory installed btw, so if it's cracked when it is pressed in, it's factory cracked....except of course the second one Jon had to press in.

The only other thing that comes to mind is that something is not aligned well and you are wearing the bushing to one side.  If so, try readjusting the alignment, so the case is presented such that the swager head gets a straight shot at the pocket and is not pushed to one side or the other.

If that doesn't help, I wouldn't hesitate to go to RCBS for help here.  How else do you think designs are perfected?  You're using the hell out of this thing....I'm sure they will appreciate the input.  I'm betting they will ask you to send it back to them, so they can look at it, along with a few cases you swaged.  If they have to "fix" the problem, they'll send you a new fixed version.

I think I'll email an RCBS R&D engineer I've gotten acquainted with and see what he says.

Thanks everyone for the response.

When I spoke to RCBS after the first one broke, they informed me it was basically an insert to keep the aluminum frame from egging out.  RCBS also told me it was pressed in, and the tech wasn't sure if I would be able to put it back in by hand.  The bushing in mine slides in and out easily, so I'm guessing the hole is too big, which could be contributing the problem.

I will give RCBS a call this morning and update!

Forgot they are closed on Friday, guess I'll be calling Monday!

Where? Where?  (One thing I like about Arfcom is you can edit your own old posts.) John87.....geeze another numbered name....I'm amazed that your photo memory can single me out that quick......so nobody else has done it?
Sigh....old has its drawbacks.  I apologize Dryflash3, but remembering numbers in names is not my strong point......DryflashT, I can remember. (T for Trinity).....so that will help me from now on......maybe.   BTW, what is the significance of the "3"?  Just curious.

JON!  Yup, I'd tell RCBS about the loose bushing.  That ain't right.  Looks like you need a new casting to me...old one is defective.

Nothing special, just wanted a number in my screen name. I like the number 3 better than 2 anyway.
