Hello gents,
Picked up my first 40 S&W the other day -- a Glock Gen 23. Been reloading for years but never for the 40. Want to use a 165 plated or jacketed bullet. W-W 231 powder or Unique. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks ! |

Got my first 40S&W Glock 23 this year. Tested five powders, one being Unique with 165 grain jacketed FP bullets. My results with IMI 165 jacketed flat nose bullets using CCI 500 primers, temperature was 65 degrees, with an overall length at 1.125", all with Winchester once fired brass in my G23 were:
5.7--956 fps 6.0--1008 fps 6.3--1030 6.6--1070 fps. All loads cycled fine with no pressure signs. Compare this data with other published charges. Unique loads shot good for me but if I was going to pick one of the 5 powders I tested the winner would be Winchester Super Field WSF. It for some reason gave equal velocity but felt recoil was softer than Power Pistol, Unique, and AA#5. No need to push the limits. |

I use Unique (because it's cheap) with my .40 loads. 185g JHP (Magtechs), 5.3g Unique, whatever primers I can find for cheap (Usually Winchester or Remington)
I tried either Clay's or International Clay's once (I can't remember off the top of my head), and I had overpressure issues with it. Like "almost blew myself up" overpressure issues. ETA- the Clay's incident was caused by an as-yet still undetermined factor, but I'm 100% sure I fucked up somewhere. So don't let my dumb mistakes discourage you from trying it. Just be careful. |
