I tried benchmark today.
55 gr Hornady SP and 60 gr Hornady HP.
I the benchmark liked the heavier round. I usually shoot varget, but benchmark runs so much nicer thru the lee perfect powder, I think Im a convert.

Good to know as I just purchased a pound of Benchmark last week. I usually use Varget also, but my local shop was out.
Do yourself a favor and ditch the Lee powder dispenser. I have all Lee reloading equipment, but always hated the powder measurer. I bought an RCBS Uniform powder measurer off Ebay last year and have never used my Lee measurer again. I know alot of reloaders trash Lee, but I have never had an issue with any of their stuff, except the powder measurer and their scale (which I also upgraded to the RCBS scale).

couple weeks ago, I stopped at my local shop for varget and they were out too. got the  benchmark and loaded up what I had in bullet.

benchmarks seems to like heavy bullets. maybe I should try something a bit heavier.

Benchmark is pretty good across the range of .223 bullets.  It meters better than Varget and exhibits the same temp stability.  I've used a decent amount of it.

That said I've gotten better accuracy from IMR 8208XBR.  It also meters very well and is temp stable.

I started out with a RCBS powder thrower and their manual trickler, then I bought a Chargemaster Combo. Punch in the grains you want, push another button, and it spits it out for you. It even works well with Varget. There's no going back for me.

And thanks for the info about Benchmark, guys. I've always been curious about it.

chargemaster would be nice, but its not in my price range at the moment...

I get better velocities at safer pressures out of my 16 inch barrel. I use it almost exclusively now. Meters + or – .5 grains out of my LNL powder measure

My preferred load in 223 uses benchmark. I find that 55's don't like to be pushed to the max with it.  I load to 24 grains with good luck

I have the Lyman dps3 electronic powder dispenser sorta like chargemaster but cheaper. Meters varget with ease occasionally it will through a wild one in wich my alarm goes off just dump in resvior and do it again.

How long have you had it?

And about the Benchmark, has anybody used it much with heavier bullets? I found very little info for it for anything heavier than 55gr in .223.

I use it for 45-55 grain bullets, its burn rate is faster than Varget, so you give up velocity with heavier bullets, accuracy with the mid weight projectiles has been excellent.

As far as an extruded powder goes, is it a fine extruded powder or coarser?

I think my 16" 1 in 9 twist rifle liked the 60 gr HP better than the 55 Gr. SP.

It is a very short cut extruded powder.

It has a very thin short kernel.  Meters very well for an extruded powder.

You won't find a lot of data for heavier bullets simply because it's on the fast side of .223 powders and better suited to lighter bullets.

my lymans only lists Benchmark upto 63 gr.

Well that sucks. I guess I could use it for the 55gr FMJ I have laying around for plinking, but that's about it. All the other .224 diameter bullets I have on hand are 77gr Nosler CCs. But Varget does both well, so.......

Thanks for the visual Broadside, I may be giving it a try, only planning on shooting the 55's or 63's.

Benchmark has been a staple for lighter .223 bullets(<55gr). Varget will do better with bullets over 55gr.

Just couple months scored killer deal on it at local gun shop 50$ keypad Was broke as it was floor model so I called Lyman sent it in and they sent me brand new unit under warenty. Their 269.99 at cabelas here in town. You can buy data cable has cd with program to enter your recipes in and download to hard drive on unit. Plus you can download recipes from other websites to it I don't personally own that though. I couldn't pass it up as they were clearencing everything due to they were closing their doors. Only way I would of afforded one. I really need to get decent off press powder drop for my bulk pistol  and new beam scale. But with our baby showing up 6 weeks early budget is on lockdown for now

That's kinda how I got my RCBS. The Cabela's where I used to live had it in the Bargain Cave for $260. I decided to look for an RCBS when an acquaintance told me about going through 3 of the Lymans due to, you guessed it, the keypad going bad. Of course it was under warranty and they replaced it each time, but the last time he just took it back in for a refund, and bought a RCBS.
