I have an LAR- 8 Mid Lenght that I'd like to start reloading for. Given all the different dies out there what seems to work best in a semi-auto?

any major brand honestly.  same brands off small base sizer dies.  you do not need these in most cases.

Are the small base dies not recommended? I have full length dies but I'm afraid of having them to tight.

Unless you know that your chamber has some strange dimensional issues, you don't automatically reach for small base dies.
Once you know the headspace of your chamber, you can use a regular FL size die and bump your shoulders back just enough for reliable function, as compared to over cold working the brass with too much shoulder set back or small base dies.

Not sure what you mean by "to tight".

You want a FL sizing die.

Neck sizing is for bolt actions, not auto loaders.

That's what I thought, full length it is. Thanks, J

Small base dies over work the brass, But, if you source brass from a vendor of once fired military brass, you may well need the small base die for the initial sizing.  Most 7.62x51 aka 308 Win. fired in machine guns with genorous chambers need a pass through a small base die.

As all of have said a properly set FL size die will cover most instances, you may want to invest in a Wilson or Dillon case gage.

For loading gas gun ammo any brand of die will work, including Lee RGB. Have used RGBs to load 750 meter, 223 topped with 75 grain Hornady hpbt seated on 24 grains of Varget.

Now figure the bullet drop on that.

Thanks, all my M-1A stuff will work. Just never owned anything like an AR-10. Covering all my bases. J

I prefer Hornady dies but have used RCBS and Lee with no issues.  The Hornady dies just seem to be easier to adjust for me. Any major brand will get the job done.
