Hi all, I recently got a Dillon 550-B with a strong mount and all the other bells and whistles that come with it (sans the case feeder and low powder sensor). I am 6 foot tall and stand when I reload. I was wondering what the total height of the press should be for good comfort and what not. I know that this is really a personal preference and all but is there a recommended starting height? What is the total height of your press. The shell plate in the lowest position as a reference point. TIA |

Old school way, put press on strong mount. Place on a table, measure height. How does it feel? Need to go up? Place a box under strong mount carefully cycle handle of press, how does it feel? Continue to experiment, you will find what is comfortable for you. New school way, ask on internet...get many answers which may or may not be correct for you. Good luck either way, I sit and don't use a strong mount, so I can't give a better answer than this.

The bench that I had my 550B on was 36" tall. It started off as a plant table for my wife, then turned into a cage stand for my sons pet, then was re-purposed for reloading.
I am 5'10" and it was an ok height. Maybe would have been good to have the bench a little taller (an inch or so....) I have now put the press on a 32" tall bench, and it is the perfect height for sitting in a folding chair. I would suggest that you set the press so that the base of it is between 36" and 38". When you find what height is best for the press, decide if you will still use the strong mount. Good luck. |
| A good rule of thumb is to have the press handle/knob even with your shoulder when the handle is in the upright position. This is comfortable on the arm and also locates the press so that you can easily look into it. I like to sit while reloading (several hours sometimes) and have my presses mounted on a 30" high bench and use an office chair. |
