55gn & 62gn seem to be about the only weight FMJs I can find in .223.  Are other weights available?

Why not look into HPBT (hollow point boat tail) bullets?

this. i ordered some 77gr seirra matchkings from midway, but when they got here the box says to only use them in 1:7 and1:8 barrels. i planned on shooting these out of our a1 clone, which is 1:12 i believe. ohh well

Expect very poor accuracy due to the 1:12 barrel not being able to stabilize such a long and heavy bullet.  They will tumble through the air and keyhole on the target.  I learned this the hard way with 62gr m855 bullets in my Rem 700 which also has a 1:12 twist.  At first I thought it was the crappy ammo, then discovered they shot fine in my Mini 14 (1:9 or 1:10 twist.)

Get a buddy with a spotting scope directly behind the shooter to watch the bullets describe a pretty spiral as they fly down range.  He'll be able to see the wake.  Might need to shoot 300 yards or more to see the wake.

Sierra makes a 55 grain hunting bullet.  I had a hundred or so mixed in with a bag of 52 grain MK's.  They shot pretty well, a hell of lot better than M193's.

Speer has a 55 and a 62 grain FMJ-BT.

Maybe, but it's not the way to bet with that short barrel.  Standard length 9 twist barrels are right on the cusp where they might or might not shoot 75 and 77 grain bullets.  The Sierra is a little shorter than the 75 grain Hornady HPBT.  You're giving up lots of speed with the short barrel, speed that is needed to make up for the slow twist barrel.
