I've been using Reloader 15 for my 223 and 308 but its a little expensive for what you get. I've been looking at surplus 844 since it is cheaper and I can get 3 more pounds for $10. So is it worth it to switch from reloaded to 844? Will I see similar results using 844?
Thanks in advance. |

If you're making basic plinking or informal target practice ammo then by all means use it. I use it for 55 fmj plinking training fodder when I don't need the "utmost" accuracy. I had better accuracy with BLC2 which is similar in burn rate to 844 but both are temp sensitive. If you're shooting high power matches and in the running to win or place then stick with the RL15. If you're shooting run and gun 3 gun style matches then the 844 will be plenty good. |

I've made up plinking rounds with Hornady 55 FMJ's, Royal Ordnance Radway Brass, CCI 450 primers, and 844. Between 24 and 25 grains seemed best for me but obviously work up. My rifle liked it hotter and with the same hotter loads my carbine pierced primers on warm days so use caution as always.
My RRA NM would be about 1.25 moa with the combo. (the hornady fmj NOT any other fmj for that kind of accuracy (Winchester, Rem, and PRVI are lesser quality) Frankly the winchester is junk. TAC is another powder for your use that you might want to price out. It used to be on sale frequently before it go so popular. |

Thanks for the advice. Now I just need a place to buy powder from that wants to take my money. I've contacted 2 places and they have not got back with me. Give Dan or Steve a call I sent them 2 emails and called the number on the Hi-Tech ammo webpage and have not heard back from them. |

Maybe they're just really busy? |

This will mostly be just plinking ammo. I may save some reloader 15 for some accurate rounds through the 308 but that's it. That's pretty much what I do. My "Premium" reloads are 8082 XBR, "Match Grade" gets Re15, "Service Grade" (ball for deep storage) gets Tac, and my plinkers all get 844. I use more Tac and 844 than anything. Then again, I have a "shoot one, replace with 2" policy, so for every plinker I pull the trigger on, I'll generally load one to store and another plinker to replace it with. |

A few years ago I bought 16 lbs. of WC846 which is a "dirtier" version of WC844. I just recently started loading for an AR, so I'm using it now. I load in 100 rd. batched for High Power competition and have found I can set my powder measure and rarely have to adjust it because this stuff meters so well. Loaded with 60 Sierra HP's I get groups between 1" and 1 1/2" with a 6X scope. I remove the scope and install a carry handle to shoot matches. I'm new to AR's having always fired bolt guns, but last Saturday I managed a 715-10X with said powder.
Rx15 is super good powder and I use it in my .223 bolt gun, .308W, 7.5x55mm and 35 Whelen getting outstanding accuracy in each. Have you tried Jeff Bartlett or Poly Gun bags for WC844? GG |

GG Whoa there bunky. We need to get some facts straight here. WC846 is not the "dirtier version of WC844." WC844 was developed specifically to replace IMR's extruded powder for the M16's 5.56mm round. That's not to be confused with WC846 ball powder which was specifically developed for the M14's 7.62x51 (.308) round to give it equivelent performance as the M2 ball, 30-06 ammo used in the M1 Garand that the M14 replaced. The commercial equivalent of WC844 is Hodgdon's H335 while the commercial equivalent of WC846 is Hodgdon's BLC (2) and they are two different powders. Yes, there is load data for both powders in .223 handloads but the fact remains that they are two different powders developed for two different calibers. For the OP, Pat's Reloading has some WC846 for your AR and M1A. |

I also read that WC846 MIGHT be similar to BLC-2 and MIGHT be similar to H335, but lots vary quite alot. Bunky |
