I am looking for something to shoot steel a little closer without worrying about splater or return fire. I have found some for sale but it's really high to just get out and plink with. Can you buy it in it's components for reloading, just the bullets themselves?

If so how do you reload it? Can they be seated just like any other round can?

What caliber are you looking for? I've seen 223, 30 & 40 cal frangible bullets for sale.

Widener's has a great deal on 40 cal

There's a member here that goes by the name KodiakRange.  He has an indoor range and reloads his own frangible ammo.  Don't know how often he visits the site, though.

I just bought 3k 125gr .400" from Wideners. I used Quick Load to find a load for them. I loaded for .40sw with 7.8gr of AA#7.  Should be around 950fps @ around 20,000psi. I fired about 60 rnds into my trap they functioned perfectly at that light loading. I have not had them to the range yet so I do not know how they shoot, but these are for my Glock27 which likes everything out to 20-25 yards.

Use water-dropped wheel weights.    They turn into lead dust upon impact.

Guys I'm mainly looking for .223. I have shot plenty of 9mm at 25 yards and while there is a risk I'm not really worried about the pistol rounds. However the 20 or so .223 rounds, actually xm193, that I've shot at 25 yards didn't come back at me but it was brand new ar500 steel hanging at an angle down. I don't plan in doing it again I just wanted to see the effect on the steel. It didn't leave what I'd call a dimple but did leave a mark you can't rub off. LOL  I've heard that if your steel gets beat up bad it will increase the chance of one coming back at you.

So if I can find  some cheap frangible bullets I can reload to practice with at 25 yards that's what I'm going to do. I expect that if I ever have to use my rifle in a defense type situation it will be inside a 100 yards and most likely inside of 25 yards so I try to practice at this range. It's more realistic and definately a lot more fun to shoot steel.

If I can't afford to buy or reload frangible ammo I may just have to stick with my pistol at this range on the steel.

Any suggestions or experience on what you guys do or use?

For 223 an easy option is Barnes Varmint Grenades.
