As I was loading up primer tubes tonight for my next run of 55 gr FMJBTs that my SCAR likes, I started thinking about reloading subsonic 223 ammo for my suppressor that I'm patiently waiting for (4 months pending thus far - Surefire 556-212). I'm initially going to use the suggestion from Hodgdon's manual which is 55 FMJBTs on top of some Trailboss. In reality, this isn't really a whole lot more than a high speed 22 Long Rifle. I was wondering if any of you guys have loaded up some subsonics using the heavier bullets, the 69-77 grain ones? They'd have a little more weight behind them. In subsonics, I don't think that would be a bad thing. Am I off base here? There is little information out there about reloading subsonic 223, and even less with heavier bullets. Is this just a round about way to talk myself into getting a 300 BLK?  |

It won't cycle an action. Besides, that's what suppressed .22 bolt guns are for. Not much difference in weight or velocity. |

I have done a little bit of work with my son's suppressor on his AR. Trail Boss works great and is very quiet with 55 grain bullets. However the load won't even start to cycle the action. You could try heavier bullets but I would shoot them first without the suppressor on and at the approximate velocity you desire to make sure they are stabilizing. Set up a target about 25 yards away and see the bullet impacts indicate any key holing or other instability. Better to learn of this with the suppressor off than with it on and have a baffle strike. I haven't tried it so not sure what twist is needed to stabilize a 69 to 77 grain bullet at 1000 fps.
If a person wants a suppressed gun on an AR platform that cycles, 223 is NOT the way to go. Fun to shoot full power 223 loads with much less noise and muzzle blast but if you are after quiet and a gun that cycles, a different caliber is the way to go. |
| Cycling the action isn't even close to being a possibility. A couple of years ago I did some experimentation with downloaded .223 loadings which were still WELL above subsonic velocities using a couple of different powders and bullet weights and even with modified super-light buffers and a carbine gas system nothing would cycle the action. Trying to make what essentially would have been a semi-auto .22 Hornet for ground squirrels. Something like a pistol-length gas system and/or a modified BCG would probably be required before cycling is a possibility. |
| I have been working up a load with 70 gr Speer SP bullets. So far 5.3 gr of Trailboss over a Remington 7.5 primer is going 1020 fps out of an 11.5" 1/9 barrel. I only loaded 2 and did not shoot them with a can on, only over the chrono and looking for clean paper tears. 3.7 gr of Trailboss in the same barrel doesn't leave the barrel (ask me how I know). It was all pretty far down the barrel so I used a M200 blank to shoot it out. |
