Had time to scrap my brass today.  There was a place that pays $1.75 per LB but it is a 80 mile round trip for me.  So this place was local and payed $1.50.  That I can live with.  I did how ever run this over my scale before going.  I left tags in the buckets so they would know I knew what I had.  that seems to have worked out.  Also glad they had taken the old primer too.  Forgot to unload the copper I had with me.  Oh well next time.  The payout was $314.60.  What to buy

They're only paying $0.50/lb here.

Internet scrap dealers are always more generous than the places I go to.

As a side note that large pail is 15GAL then a 5GAL and the primers are in a 3 GAL pail.  That was about 1 year worth of primers.  I had plenty more brass at one time.  But used to trade  a guy for range brass.  So he could scrap it and I would get free brass out of the deal.  I just don't have the time to sort it anymore.  That and I have a good supply of brass now and don't really need it either.

huh guess i should start saving spent primers also.  stupid question maybe but are they made of brass also?

Most are.  They added about 40LB to the total.

Some but not many  of the places I called said they wouldn't take 22 brass.  They find to many live rnds in it.  A pail of 22 brass is some of the heavyest brass you'll find to scrap.    If my memory serves me right the pail of 22 brass will weight more than a pail of .50  BMG brass.

I need to find a better way to pick .22 brass up. There's gotta be $500 worth at the range. I usually pick some up by hand each trip for bullet swaging but it takes forever so I usually quit after 200-300.

a shovel and screen work OK.  Then a magnet to pull the steel cases out.  I can't tell ya how many 12ga hulls I have raked up and thrown out.

the weight of 22 makes sense.  the bigger the case the more volume of air inside.  yes theres more metal but fewer cases fit inside the same space.  still the guys at my local scrapyard are lazy.  if i have to ill bury the 22 brass on the bottom of the bucket to hide it.  but ill try to be honest first.

I might have to try to make a small bucket with a screen. I actually collect the steel with a magnet for reloading so that won't bother me

I scraped some ammo brass here in Lansing, MI last week at $1.95 a pound. It was in the 1.80-1.85 range for a long time but it went up.

Smaller objects pack better into a volume.

You should see how heavy a bucket of spent primers is.

A bucket of primers is the way to go, man.. big $ in that, also for .22's but as for myself I just throw whatever in a bucket and when its full i take it out. Never had an issue here, but I do run it over my scale first that's for sure, that should be something that someone does first... I even pick up the steel hulls, they take them too but its like 10 cents a lb, I don't care its an extra 10 dollars usually.

I also get bullets from a local indoor range and I "cook" them to get the lead out and its a dirty job but it gets me nice clean high grade brass/copper mix and they give me a decent price for it as well, so essentially this way I get the lead for free, and its good stuff too.

I still have most of a plastic drywall mud pail of primers left from many years of heavy Bullseye practice and competition.

It is a few inches below the top, adn cannot be picked up by the now missing handle (it broke off around 1/3 full).

i tip it up just enough to get the plate from a hand trick under the bottom when I need to move it around the basement.

It is tucked in a corner now, and liable to stay there a while longer.

I did scrap out another bucket that was almost full a few years back though.

With the price of brass what it is now you might want to start thinking about selling it.  I know I would be

Yes but they pay what is called breakage.  In other words its not just AL and must be processed to remove the other metals.  It pays very little but still pays.

Piker!

Last time I made a run to the scrap yard, we took about 2800 lbs of brass to them. Primers really help, but I recommend not putting them into large containers due to their density.

I think I've got less than 50 pounds hanging around now though...

I'm surprised at the low price paid for the scrap brass.  I took in 110 lbs of scrap brass and primers (I just dump them in the pails with the brass) on Jan 5th and got an even $2.00 a pound.

You would never get that price down here.  The best I have heard is $1.75 for brass shell casings here in FL.  Other brass like red brass will bring more.  I had never been to this yard before so I had the primers separated.  If one was to mix them in with the brass and there be a problem,  well that would be a MPITA.

Thats MR. Pikey to you

You know the rules here pics or it didn't happen

You had all that .50BMG brass to scrap though.  This was almost all my brass, minus  about 1/2 the primers.

I have learned a couple things in this thread:

A) I am a dumbass for not saving the spent primers!  I have been chucking them in the trash all these years!
B) Didn't know primers were brass, I thought aluminum
C) Never thought about picking up .22 brass to recycle.  heck, I was always glad on .22 days that I didn't have to scrounge for brass!

I thought most .22 cases were actually copper, not brass...

I have a 5 gal bucket about 2/3 full... no idea what it weighs.... but I bet I can find my wife's scale later...

22 brass is brass.  sometimes 22 bullets are copper washed.  tho honestly if they were copper thats even better.  copper is worth MORE.

I'm not sure if I have any pictures of the old shop or the 55 gal drums of the scrap brass. I'm working on buckets now.. that I'm out of the Class 6 game.

Probably be in your neck of the woods February, I think.

Last time I went in to recycle brass, lady at desk had to call someone. Was asked if the brass was deprimed basically. They weren`t going to pay as much if it wasn`t.
This was about 2 months ago. I think I got around 1.60 for it per pound.

I guess some places are different.

My local place pays $2/lb for scrap brass. I just throw my primers in with the brass.

They give you coupon that you scan at a machine outside the office and spits out money like an ATM.

Nice walking out with cash in your hand.

I haven't scrapped much brass yet, but being a electrician I get to scrap quite a bit of copper. Oregon made a law that any non ferrous metal that is scrapped has to be paid with a check after a 3 day waiting period.  Sorta sucks, and in the end it isn't really doing much to combat the theft of metals like it was designed to do. But it is what it is.

I've got a 270 cup blue plastic Maxwell House jug probably 70% full.  It's holding about 20-22,000 spent primers, if it helps you guess any.
