Since this is the first batch of ammo I've loaded up and I couldn't find any data for the bullet/powder combo, I thought I'd run it by here first.  It's more the OAL that I'm worried about, since I used data for a different bullet to come up with the charge weight.

9mm luger
124gr. Horn XTP
4.4 gr W231
1.11" OAL

I only have the Lee 2nd edition book right now, but I also did a lot of searching online.  It lists 4.4 gr of W231 as starting charge for 125gr FMJ, with an OAL of 1.09.  It lists OAL for the XTP ranging from 1.06 to 1.12.  Barring a huge difference in length of bullets I figure I should be plenty on the safe side.  Any thoughts?

Check the length by putting 5 or 6 in a magazine to insure they function at that length.

Then check in the barrel of the firearm - out of the gun!

Did you check W231 data at Hodgon's web site?  Do that, too.

Someone will have the data from the Hornady book in a few minutes, I don't have one handy.

As an aside, I'm no fan of the load data in LEE's book.  The front end is great, but we've seen some flaky information in the load tables.

I dropped a few in the barrel already and cycled some through, they should function fine.  Also pass the go/no go gage.  Hodgdon's site doesn't have any data for the XTP.  My concern was with pressure variances with a different seating depth.  I'm probably being a bit paranoid about it.

Even if Hodgon doesn't have data for the XTP, they do have for 124 grain bullets.

This is where we are always stuck, there will almost never be data that exactly matches our components, so we have to do something or stop shooting.  This is one of the reasons for using start loads less than the maximum published load, to give us a little leeway when we use similar components.

You still need to check the ammunition in a magazine, and more than one or two cartridges are required to determine if they will feed.  The magazine isn't inserted into the gun, just insert the cartridges then unload the magazine by hand to see if any hang up down in the body.

Hodgon data:
Bullet Weight (Gr.) Manufacturer Powder Bullet Diam. C.O.L. Grs. Vel. (ft/s) Pressure Grs. Vel. (ft/s) Pressure
125 GR. LCN          Winchester  231  .356"  1.125"  3.9  1009  25,700 CUP  4.4  1086  31,200 CUP
125 GR. SIE FMJ  Winchester  231  .355"  1.090"  4.4  1009  24,600 CUP  4.8  1088  28,800 CUP

[I don't have my browser set up so I can put that data into a neat table.]

I guess I have them loaded pretty long, so I don't need to worry.  They run through my mag just fine.

Thanks

the hornady 7th edition manual doesn't list w231 for a powder for the 124 xtp only the 115

it lists col of 1.060 for the 124 xtp

it lists max charge for the 115 xtp and 231 at 4.7gn

hope this helps
