I am about to get back into reloading after a hiatus of many years. Some of my dies haven’t been used since 1994 and none have been used since 2003. Most have rust inside and out to one degree or another. What is the best way to remove the rust, particularly on the inside working surfaces, while doing as little damage to the die as possible? Most are RCBS but some are Lee.

Degrease them and use Evapo-Rust. It's completely safe, biodegradable, and has little odor. Heavy rust might need an extended soak. Some auto parts places and hardware stores carry it. It only removes the rust, not good metal. Best thing I've ever used. Listen to this man. Except wear rubber gloves. It's hard on my hands. |

Try contacting RCBS. They may clean them up and polish them for you for a small fee. Cost me $15 to send out a die I screwed up. They polished it, replaced the depriming pin and mailed it back in a weeks time. +1 They will polish the interior to the original finish spec. You can do this at home with automotive rubbing compound and a high speed drill. |

They might benefit from a cleaning with oil and a scotchbrite pad before polishing. If the sizer is pitted, it will still work after cleaning and polishing unless the pits are huge, but that would be a good time to replace the die. The other dies are less critical. |
