Set the 650 up on .45acp to see how it runs, is there trick to not get a primer kicked to the bench if there no shell to prime ? On the 1050 it just stays in the slide

There's a catch tray to catch'em. Yours not have one ?

I'm not liking that either. If you do a half stroke my primer wheel doesn't advance.

Build a wall on the catch tray with some paper and tape.

I don't think he's meaning spent primer, but, rather new primer with nowhere to seat them.

OP, I do not have a 650, but, on my 550 I pull the rod that activates the primer pickup arm.

I'm famalier with both presses, 650 has seperate catches for both.

I haven't found a way, either.  The priming system is completely different between the 550 and the 650, on the 550 it wouldn't grab a new primer if the previous one wasn't used, while the 650 has a disc pulling primers out so the one coming out of the tube is five slots away from where the priming action is taking place, and the disc is automatically indexed with each stroke of the handle.

okay got the book out and now see that # 16210 / primer chute has the end broken off.  Wonder why it wasn't built so that they can ride the disc around if no case is present ?

There you go... call DILLON witih a product improvement suggestion... Majority of the time they just roll on out of the chute here.. suppose some epoxy engineering to make taller wall be in order.. our body shop has all kinds of fun adhesives.

I see you found  your problem.  Good!  I'm sure Dillon will make it right.

If you don't want the primer wheel to advance,  just remove the primer cam.  It's only one screw and it's easily accessed.

I call that chute the Runaway Primer Ramp after Runaway Truck Ramps.



The real trick is to learn to synch up your primers with your brass.  Say you're just starting out and have an empty shell plate and just loaded the primer feed tube.



When you crank the handle for the first time, and with the handle 1/2 way up on the up stroke, use your finger to advance the primer feed system 6 times.  When the first case gets to station 2 so will the first primer.



When running out of primers you don't have to worry about synching up primers and brass, if you're out of primers none will go down the Runaway Primer Ramp.  You'll just have brass continually being fed from the case feeder for which there's no primer for.  So cut off the case feeder when the buzzer on the primer feed system goes off and you'll be close to ending brass feeding when the primers runs out.



Synching up primers with brass when you're running out of brass is trickier.  You want the last primer to be fed when the last piece of brass is to be primed.   You have to use common sense for this, if you have 10 pieces of brass left don't dump 100 primers in the primer feed tube.  The secret is when it's time to refill the primer feed tube and you have less than 100 pieces of brass, then only partially fill the primer feed system.  This means you have to load the primer feed tube on the spot with the exact number of primer or dump some out of the tube.  



I take the easy way out and just let the primers run down the runaway primer ramp.

Some people buy separate priming systems for the 650, I never saw the need, it's not that big of a deal to switch out the primer feed wheel nor the primer feed tube from large to small or vice versa.  Plus it forces me to clean the old one before putting it in storage and to clean and lube the new one before use

Yeah, I understand that Angus6!  I'm still contemplating pulling the trigger on getting a 1050.  I hate swaging primer pockets that much!

I didn't see this answer yet. If you all you need to do is keep it from advancing just once because you're missing a casing in the primer/powder station, just use your finger to lift the ratcheting arm up out of the hole in the primer wheel on the upstroke of the press. Can do this as needed whenever a case is missing.
