So, I'm helping a friend work up a load (175grn M118) for his FAL, and this afternoon we started testing, and of 15 rounds fired, 2 cases stuck in the chamber and 1 case had part of the rim ripped off by the extractor (these 3 problem cases all occurred within the same group of powder charge being tested). These cases have all been full-length sized and trimmed, and I am confident that my sizing die is not at fault, as I've loaded a good bit of .308 for my M14 clone and have not had any problems.  We call it quits with that particular rifle, and he then later tells me that all of the brass that he gave me to work with was fired out of a machinegun (the brass is head stamped FC .308 Win, but I'm quite sure the military doesn't use .308 head stamped ammo, so I'm not quite sure what's going on here. I think he got the brass from Wideners, but I'll have to ask him tomorrow). According to internet lore, reloading machinegun brass is a no-no, but for reasons I don't know.

Thoughts, advice?

Thanks

Did you use a case gage to calibrate the sizing die?  The brass could still be undersized.

you need to adjust the gas system. That will solve your issues.

I used some machine gun brass in my M1A many years ago with no issues.

Remember that the chambers are most likely different (chamber cutting tools wear, etc.) so dimensions won't be the same.  Meaning that just because a reload works in your M1A it may not work in the FAL.  I have one AR with a really "loose" chamber compared to my other AR's.  It still works, it just eats loads that the others won't (so now I have to make sure my reloads fit the newer rifles, too).

I have used MG brass for several years without issue in my M1A, I use a Dillon sizer which I believe it's a small base sizer, have you dropped them in a case gage to see if they are sized down enough. I have seen in some cases where you have to cam over on sizing to get the brass sized correctly.

No we do not use FC 308 brass in our MG's.  That is LC as well.
