I rarely buy new brass, normally it is all once fired or older.  I have a bag of .223 brass I want to load for my new Savage. Should I just assume it's the proper size or should I run it thru a sizing die?

Some folks full size and trim.  Some folks don't.  Some folks run it through a case gauge.  Personally I just measure to make sure I'm within "Trim" range of the manual I'm referring to.

I'm seldom buy new 223 brass either. Out of habit, I stick it in the possum hollow trimmer real quick just to be sure.

ALWAYS full length size new brass!!! This is the only way to start a reloading sesion with new brass. There is a suprising variance in new brass dimensions right out of the package.

Just trying to save you a headache later on.

I don't always buy new brass, but when I do, I size it.

In my world there are 2 kinds of cases;

Ones that I have resized, and everything else.

New brass should never need resizing as far as headspace is concerned. The necks may be dented from shipping and neck sizing only (if you own a neck sizing die) or the use of a mandrel will iron it out.

I use a mandrel.

Many here have much more reloading experience than I, but:

If you want consistent results, start with consistent brass.  Do yourself a favor and full length size and trim each of those cases.

Size it, especially if it was bulk packaged, then chamfer.

Not all the case mouths will be nice and round from shipping & handling.

Yup, same here.
I treat all foreign brass (new or used) as unknown and still prep it.
