Hey guys, just picked up a LR-308 and i'm looking for anyone that has loaded for these before? I've heard a rumor that the DPMS chambers are quite tight and that small base dies tend to work better to prevent stuck cases, myth or true?? Also any tips for loading for these types of rifles? It'll be used as 0-200yd hunting and 0-750yd paper punching. Thanks for the help guys.

Never had an issue with my lrt-sass.  I used lee dies on a single stage and was diligent on case length/trim.  Used new winchester brass and eventually used brass from once fired prvi brass.  Never had a stuck case.

Well that's good to know. I think I may go with reg base dies to start and go from there. Anyone have any service rifle .308 loads they like? I know I want to try recipies for 168gr AMAX ans SMK's.

I think the tight chambers are referring to using surplus 7.62 military ammo.  If you are using 308 Win dies then you should be good to go.

I loaded for FALs, and two M1a rifles including a National Match and had no problems with using standard die sets. I was even able to use a neck sizer only for the non match M1a. When I got my LR308 some of the ammo that was full length sized would not chamber all the way with in it. I bought a small based die set and that fixed the issue. I had tried to adjust the other dies but I had them set already about as far as I could go. Never a problem since. I make it a point to just go ahead and buy SB dies for all my auto loaders.

My LR308 has a very tight chamber. Small base dies are a must in my rifle. I also found that any loads much over listed start loads show pressure signs. I've loaded for bolt guns and for a M1A and the LR308 is a different weapon. Forget about loading hot.

Thanks for the link dryflash. I have been following that thread for recipie ideas. This thread is to mainly decide between SB or normal dies, I just thought i'd throw that little tid bit in there about recipies.

I use the same rounds for my bolt gun that I use in my LR and never had any problems with it shooting them. The factory mags suck and cause alot of feeding issues but P-mags take care of that.

RCBS FL match sizer
RCBS match seater
43 garins of varget
175 smk
win brass
fed 210m primer
2.810" oal

10 rds @ 100 yards with the LR

I use regualr dies with good success.  I did have an issue for awhile with loaded ammo getting stuck in the chamber.  I usually run my ram all the way up on the press, screw the sizer die down until it touches, then back it off 1/8 to 1/4 turn, maybe more depending on the rifle.  This was too much for my AP4.  So now, I don't back off at all.

The other thing I did was polish the chamber.  Loading and extraction is night and day.  The chamber now has a mirror like finish.
