good afternoon,
what would a good (hunting) replacement for a 168gr SMK be? my rifle shoots the SMK great but I would like to find a bullet that I can hunt with with the same flight characteristis. my rifle is a savage 10fp 308 with 1/10 twist and the load i am using is 43.2grs of 4064. any info would be helpfull.
Thanks,
Bill

Try either the Sierra 165 gr Gameking (Spitzer Boat Tail) #2145 or Gameking (Hollow Point Boat Tail) #2140.
Load data is on the Sierra website: www.sierrabullets.com

Sierra does not list loading data on their web site that I have found for rounds covered in their manual.
The bullets suggested above ought be a good choice, and load development ought to be easy!

You probably won't be able to match the trajectory exactly unless you change the speed of one of the bullets, but even if you don't a BTHP hunting bullet ought to be very close.  Adjust your sights for a maximum point blank range that suits you and your hunting.

Sierra GameKing, or the 168 AMAX would be good choices.

Well with that load out of a 20" barrel you are going about 2551fps with a advertised BC of .447. The closest you might get would be a Hornady 168gr BTHP witha BC of .450. You could help yourself a lot by going to a Nosler Ballistic Silver Tip with a BC of .490. While a high BC is not to only factor in bullet selection, it goes a long way in maintaining a flatter trajectory at a longer distance.

Sir, FWIW I prefer the Nosler BT bullets because not only is the BC higher the ballistic tip prevents damage to the bullets in the cartridges in the magazine as the rifle recoils.  Performance on Va. whitetail is also excellent, one well placed bullet is all it takes to bring one down.  Frankly at the rate I use hunting cartridges and the rate I hunt it will take me another 95 years to use the rest of the box of bullets I bought for the purpose.  I've only shot five whitetail in the last five years!  HTH, 7zero1.
