good afternoon,
what would a good (hunting) replacement for a 168gr SMK be? my rifle shoots the SMK great but I would like to find a bullet that I can hunt with with the same flight characteristis. my rifle is a savage 10fp 308 with 1/10 twist and the load i am using is 43.2grs of 4064. any info would be helpfull. Thanks, Bill Well with that load out of a 20" barrel you are going about 2551fps with a advertised BC of .447. The closest you might get would be a Hornady 168gr BTHP witha BC of .450. You could help yourself a lot by going to a Nosler Ballistic Silver Tip with a BC of .490. While a high BC is not to only factor in bullet selection, it goes a long way in maintaining a flatter trajectory at a longer distance. |

Sir, FWIW I prefer the Nosler BT bullets because not only is the BC higher the ballistic tip prevents damage to the bullets in the cartridges in the magazine as the rifle recoils. Performance on Va. whitetail is also excellent, one well placed bullet is all it takes to bring one down. Frankly at the rate I use hunting cartridges and the rate I hunt it will take me another 95 years to use the rest of the box of bullets I bought for the purpose. I've only shot five whitetail in the last five years! HTH, 7zero1. |
