Ordered some bullets from Midway, now I need some powder to go with them. I looked on the Hogdgon website to begin, and there was tons of choices to choose from. I was wondering if there were any types of powder more often used than others, and why. Not specific loads, I can find those on my own, but powder types to start from. Loads will be used in a 16in barreled AR-15. Thanks in advance.

You could do it several ways............
Ask around. Look at the mfns recommendations. Look at the reloading books and see which powders are mentioned again and again. Then...........add it your own factors............ Stick vs ball Easy/repeatable measuring Dirtyness Compressed loads Temp sensitivity Cost Availability Can I use it for another caliber? Course, I probably missed something. Aloha, Mark PS............ME, I'd buy a pound locally (save on shipping and haz mat) and do some loading. Later, when I've found something I like.........then I'll buy in bulk. |

For the time being, why not use the chart on the .223 article on the 6BR web page.
For example: http://www.6mmbr.com/223rem.html The page is conservative, AA 2015, Benchmark, H335, H4895, TAC Those are all good starting points for the 50 to 60 grain range. Mark's excellent comments plus this list will get you going. TAC and 335 are easy to use (throw). 2015 and 4895 also have wide applications. There are many others, but I think this list or the list in the Sierra manual is a good start. I don't shoot a lot of 50 - 60 loads, but when I do I use H335 for ease of metering and good behavior. |

Those are excellent bullets that feed great in an AR.
In my 16" they go into 3/4 to an inch at 100 yds for 5 shots. I prefer ball powder for loading in a progressive, Tac, BLC2, AA-2230, H-335. To squeeze the most accuracy out of them, try either Re-15 or Tac. Varget will get mentioned, but I don't use it due to measuring issues. Re-15 measures much better with the same accuracy. |
