I can get by with 2.018"ish, with my Savage 10FP LE2b barrel. You can buy Sinclair chamber plugs for cheap and know for sure. Chris |

This information can be found in every load manual available. As a beginner, you need one at minimum, and two or three is better. Reloading requires close attention to all of the details and load manuals provide that information. The maximum length is just that and should be adhered to closely for safety in absence of measurements of a chamber or if the cases will be used in several guns. The recommended minimum trim length is usually 0.010 inches less than the maximum, but not always. If you want to use cases at their maximum length for every reload, then trim them to that length and press on. Most cases I trim to a dimension just a little longer than the recommended "trim to" length so I don't have to fiddle with setting the trimmer exactly at the minimum length. |

Trim length isn't the minimum length. It is the middle of the allowable length. That allows for some error without having to worry about going too short. If you are referring to the common practice of trimming .223 Rem brass to 1.74 inches, your premise is not correct. .223 Rem cases have a neck that is darn short anyway, and I am no fan of reducing them much shorter than 1.75 inches. Plinkers can unite at 1.74 inches however and everything will work out okay. |

Agree with AeroE
There are some things we can say for sure about the standard specification for the .308 design which has a maximum standard, however the lower end isn't as well defined. The .010" traditional delta is good enough for a begginer's starting point. It gives enough guard band against the maximum without chewing up too much neck and will keep him out of trouble till his methods get more sophisticated. The .308 neck isn't very generous as it is and there is no "need" to take much more than 0.010" below maximum. Exactly where the minimum should be would hijack the thread....... |

I'm not saying that someone should trim their stuff shorter than the published trim-to length. I'm say that the actual SAAMI specification for minimum case length is shorter than trim length by the same amount the trim length is shorter than max length.
Page 42 of the SAAMI/ANSI standards defines the case length of .223 as 1.760 -0.020" Page 66 defines the .308 case length as 2.015 -0.020" http://www.saami.org/specifications_and_information/index.cfm The SAAMI specifications are all there. |

I asking this because I don't know the answer: Why does this drawing (from your link, under "Cartridge and Chamber Drawings") say (for .223) 1.760-.030 ?
