What is the most accurate way to test my reloads? I don't have a Chronograph yet but I would still like to see how they group. What is your all's opinion on the best way to do this? I'm using a G17 if that makes a difference

I someone you know has a ransom rest or the like, that would be the best. I have been considering going in with a couple guys and sharing one.

Failing that, I guess sandbags off the bench.

I'm sorry for the ad, I don't know what's up with that. How much does one of these rests cost?

True ransom rests are north of $250.00.

The one I've been eye'in runs closer to $500.00.

The average Joe won't spend that kinda cash when he can get results by laying prone with pistol resting on bags.

Here's what I do -

I set a stool on top of the bench, then put my bags on the stool and adjust the stack to fit the handgun.  If it's a revolver, I put a sacrificial shield on the bag next to the cylinder.

I set everything up so I can shoot from a comfortable standing position and don't have to crane my head.  Then the hard part is focusing on the front sight for every shot; this really requires concentration, especially over a long string.  If the gun has a scope, then I work on making sure the gun is not tilted.

I have a shop built rest for handguns that works pretty well, and it's easy to adjust, but stacking sand bags works about as well.

alright thanks guys, I guess I'll be getting the sand bags out for now and then later upgrading to a rest

I sit against a post, pull my knees up and clamp my hands between them.  Shoot 4-5 groups and take a good stretch between each one.  If you're shooting a revolver, be conscientious of where the forcing cone is and what might be ruined or worse if it shaves lead when you use this position.

The club I used to belong to had a rest that we could use.  You might just ask around.
