just got back from the range today i think i did a good job with my reloads
i used 25.7grns of imr 4064 with 55grn fmj  in my ar15 with a 18 inch barrel i cronographed it and i was around 3100 to 3200 with the twenty rounds that i loaded,i know i need to back down the powder because i had a lot of unburnt powder in the action and i could see it spit some powder out the muzzle brake but i guess that is the way you just test diffrent loads.
if any one has any sugestions to my load work up i thank you

Welcome to the reloading club.

IMR-4064 is a little slow burning for use in 223.

I would suggest one of the ball powders for easy measuring from a powder measure and for accuracy.

Try some Tac, AA-2230, or H-335.

Tac and Hornady 55 gr FMJBT's are a favorite around here.

Trying new loads is one of the fun things about reloading.

You are off in the right direction.  I would ditch the IMR 4064 as others mentioned.

+1 on H335 haven't tried it yet but my dad swears by it. I've had pretty good luck with Varget, the only drawback is it's kind of hard to throw.

I'll add another +1 on H335, used it for my first reloads I just shot couple weeks ago and everything went smoothly. Admitedly I have no idea how other powders compare, so far no complaints.

Like the OP, I too am a newbie to reloading.  I almost bought the same powder as the OP but went with IMR 4895 instead.   Anyone have any comments about that powder?  And why can't I find TAC (that so many rave about) around where I am?
