I plan on starting out with a hornady lock n load progressive. I know that the common advice is to start with a single stage but I am very mechanically inclined and follow directions easily. I have watched many videos and read several tutorials about the press. I feel comfortable with my decision. However, I can't find some info that I need.
- what is included with the press? Any shell plates or dies? - I would also need case trimmers and such for case prep, correct? - any other suggestions for equipment to get started? Thanks! |

Get enough LNL bushings (one for each die that you'll use). Yes you'll need all the case prep tools. You will probably want a powder cop die (powder checker die, to make sure you don't get a double charge or squibb). You may want to get the powder thru expanders for your pistol calibers. Also, separate bullet seater dies and crimp dies work better. If you load for multiple calibers, multiple case activated lower dies will speed up the conversion. You might also want to get a couple of powder metering inserts (one for each caliber). Be sure to read all the How-To's at the top of the Reloading forums. The ABCs of Reloading is a great book to start with, as well as a couple of other manuals. |

The powder measure comes with rotors and inserts for rifle and pistol, and all the parts you will need to load anything Hornady makes a shellplate for. You will still need a tumbler and case trimmer for case prep. I'd suggest for loading pistol ammo, you seat and crimp separately, and use a Powder Cop die as well. You will need a scale to set up your powder measure. I have a Lyman digital scale that Mrsdoublearon got me. It stays set up next to my LNL AP. To fill your primer fill tubes, you'll want a primer flip tray. Nobody said you have to fill all 5 stations with cases. Try starting with just one cartridge at a time. Get used to seeing all the operations as it cycles around, and remember to look at the Powder Cop when the ram is at the top of its stroke, to verify that the case isn't over/under charged. |
