So a while back I grabbed two boxes of primers from my oldest box of CCI small pistol primers. I did not realize until I was done that somehow half of the box of 1000 small pistol primers are actually small pistol magnum primers. I loaded 200 40 S&W cartridges with small pistol magnum primers then noticed my mistake. I have always been good about reading the labels out load but the one time I didn't until I was done it was too late. My typical plinking round (which was what these were going to be for) is a berry's 165 grain with 7.4 grains of power pistol.
Any suggestions as to what to do with these for my stupid ass are appreciated.

As long as your load isn't near max (I haven't used PP yet, so I don't know), you should be fine. I've loaded 9mm and .45 with Magnum primers.
I've done the same (sorta) thing. The guys at Cabelas handed me magnum primers not once, but twice. Once for when I started loading .45, and once when I started loading 9mm. CCI's packaging had the "Magnum" in a really thin font and I didn't catch it even though I "checked" the box after they handed it to me both times. The new boxes seem to have fixed the problem with bigger font. To get the most accuracy out of the loads with those primers, I'd work up another load as the new primer might not like that powder charge. It will also help you in the future since you'll have a load that works with magnum primers if everywhere is sold out of the regular primers. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Have done the same mistake with 40 S&W and small rifle primers. Had some 500 plus loaded before owning the fact I'm over 40 and need glasses. Anyway, made a major drama queen post all about it with mixed responses. Called Hogdons, they said I might be ok. Called CCI and got an Ass eating and a face full of spit from CCI's tech guy. Who btw, has nothing good to say about loading hot for race guns. Then I pulled a few before brave enough to shoot a few. So I bought a Chronagraph and fitted my self in an armored blast suit complete with helmet and blast shield. Loaded and suited set everything up on the back fourty cause I didn't want to blow down the neighbors house in case of a kaboom.
With the dogs and all livestock soundly penned in the barn. I positioned myself behind a six foot concrete blast barrier. With one arm swung around edge and both eyes closed, I squeezed off a shot through chronograph....... It registered 20 fps faster than normal if loaded with small pistol primer. Have used magnum pistol primers in 40S&W when primers were hard to find. Same results.20 fps faster, maybe. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
