Been away fromm the 9 for awhile.

I've been loading 45, 10mm and 40. Just picked up a G17 and want to be able to load my own defense type round without paying the retarded prices for Bonded, Dotted, Hydra, Extreme, blah, blah, blah.

Anyway, ordered dies, brass and bullets. I looked at shell holders today and some list different dies for 9 and 40 another, I think LEE lists it as same. I looked at em today and the case head and rim seem very close and the 40 SH does seem to hold the 9. Are they GTG?

Also, Starline has 9MM brass and 9 MM +P brass. Do I really need special brass for +P loads?

Thanks

Lee list them as the same Some other Manufactures do no. They interchange on my bench.

The 550 Dillon uses the same shell plate for 9 and 40.  And, so there are redundant cross over uses look at RCBS #3 45 ACP 308 35 Whelen are all covered
But RCBS lists #16 for 9mm and #27 for 40.

The XL650 doesn't, the 40 is shell plate W.  When I tried it, I was able to load about 80% of my 40 brass using the #5 shell plate for 9mm.  The other 20% were just too tight to get into the shell plate.  Broke down, got the 40 caliber conversion kit and loaded the remaining 20% without problems.

Lee lists 19 as the shell holder for 40, and shell holder 19 and 6 for 9mm Luger.

Beats me, but .40 S&W won't fit in my RCBS 9mm shellholder.

The same plate works for 6.8 SPC also...

Lee #19 works for both.

+P designation on 9mm is just for identification purposes.  There is no structure difference.

+1 and rcbs list two separate ones also.

I would use a 9mm.

.223 fits in the 9mm shell holder but 10% of the cases have the rims ripped apart when priming. So I would think the same would occur, especially since 9mm fits inside 40S&W
