I've got a bunch of .223 brass that I've either shot myself or picked up at the range. The 2 most prominent types are Hornady and Lake City. The Hornady all has the same headstamps, but the Lake City ranges from LC 02-LC 08. I thought I had read somewhere that LC 06-09 was good but others was not. Is there any truth to this? Or am I fine using any of the LC I have?

The numbers after the LC is the year manufactured.

I've never heard of any LC brass that was not GTG

I will stick my neck out and say that ALL LAKE CITY BRASS IS EXCELLENT.

If our military can bet their lives on LC, it should be good enough for any of us.

Some of the brass has a slight dent on the side, very small. I'll try to upload pics at some point when I get everything working, but is a tiny dent going to have an effect on anything?

That dent will go a way PDQ when you pull on the bang button

ETA:  As long as it is a dent and not a crease, you're ok

ALL LC brass is junk I'll pay you scrap price for it if you send it to me  You do know you'll have to remove the crimp in the primer pocket right ?

I went through each piece looking at the headstamps and cleaning out the primer pocket and out of close to 100 only about 6 or 7 had a crimp in the primer pocket. Should I assume this means the rest of it was reloaded at one point?

It sure would if you can see that the crimp has been reamed out.

ETA you might want to look that brass over real good there would be no telling how many times its been fired.

Should the neck look pretty close to perfect? Theres some that don't look like they're split but have a few scratches on them...

I'd bet it's all got a crimp unless someone else has already removed it. I've got LC stuff here from the 70's 80's 90's And stuff that came out of white box Winchester stamped 08 that's all crimped.

You'll find out for sure when you go to reprime it.

LC is thicker in construction than Commercial Brass, you will need to back off a bit (usually 1 gr as a rule for loads) as the case has a reduced capcity thus producing higher pressures in the chamber.
with that being said LC quality / consistanty is as good or better than Commercial brass  depending on your loads you can expect 5 -7 Loading before needing to retire the brass to a bolt gun or scrap pile.
OOOOHHH yeah before I forget
LC will have a crimp Exception to the Rule LC Match WILL NOT have a Crimp
the crimp is in place for automatic fire weapons systems that is how the specs are called out.
and no there is not a year that any LC brass is bad the Army HAS NOT RECALLED (full years production) any as unsafe with ammo if anytime that is a suspect all suspected LOTs are Destroyed.
BTW LC is run by ATK  in Lake City MO (private Contractor aka Speer, etc etc look up ATK in Google)with oversight by Rock Island

All bad cases, splits, deep dents, cracked necks, and FUBAR foreign mil ammo.

All LC 223 brass is GTG if it passes case inspection and brass prep.

You should probably read this before you post that again.

Not a Problem  guy I will happily not post.
and yes my last understanding was that LC had less Volume than commercial
that was as of the las data sheets I seen for the Cases however admitably I have not seen a revision data sheet recently (within several years prints could have changed with intro of the A2 Ammo).
I never would have thought to offer advice to error on caution would be unwelcomed advice.
thank you for your time and thoughts Sirs
