| Didn't get any answers in the AR15 ammo forum.... I can get wally world .223 (rem, umc, fed) new ammo, OR, I can get ultramax reloads. It seems to me that the ultamax is all LC brass, whereas the other is ...other. However, for the purpose of saving brass to reload eventually, which is my better choice? As a side note, does anybody know if ultramax is ONCE fired brass, or could it have been reloaded several times before they ...reload it |

Agree on going with Remington and avoiding Federal, except some American Eagle is using LC Nato stamped brass. I wouldnt get Federal if it's FC marked. Winchester White Box is good stuff too. Still, you can buy once fired brass and just start using reloads out of the gate. |

If they are reloading mass quantities of LC brass then most likely it is once fired MIL. As far as I know the Military doesn't reload their brass, they sell it. From my experience with range pickups, it's mostly commercial. The club range on base varies between MIL and Comm as it sometimes gets rented by the units who don't police all their brass. I would consider it once fired and a bonus is that the crimp is already removed. |

From your choices, get the UMC or Rem, which are both made by Remington.
I would suggest not buying FC, as their rifle brass is not as long lasting as other brands. Look for my post in This thread for more on FC 223 brass. Other excellent ammo/good brass brands are Win and PMC. I believe Ultramax is the brand that massively over reams the primer pockets on their loads. I would pass. Read the info at the top of the page, it will help answer a lot of reloading questions. |

The real deal in reloading is purchasing surplus 5.56mm brass. Lake City brass is every bit as good, maybe better than, most commercial options. Once you address the crimped primer issue it's fixed for the life of that case.
If you have friends in the police force ask them where they parctice. Usually they leave the brass on the ground. Local departments practice at our range as our guests, free of charge. They leave massive amounts of .40 S&W as well as .223 when they are done. I try to make my club visits based around their schedule. I ended up buying two .40 S&W pistols because I gathered close to 8000 empty cases and didn't have an outlet for them. I'm really happy with the round, the firearms and most of all the free brass. |

can not say about the the primer pockets on the Ultramax, that brass got mixed in with my other LC brass so I am not sure which is what....but have not had any issues with anything out of those buckets so far.
I do know the Ultramax ammo I got and shot years ago was balls on....I was shooting sub 3/4MOA groups at 300 yards with there 308 ammo I picked up from Cabelas on the way to a presicion rifle class. |
